AD Fulmer was going to let Barnes go to UCLA.
He was never going. Do the Math

$5 million buy-out.

$5 mill a year salary.

California state income tax 13.5%.

So from Day 1 he is $5 mill in the hole.

First year on a $5 mill salary in Caly he would net about $2.5 mill

40% fed and Medicare tax leaves $3 mill , state income tax another $500,000

So he would have taken over 2 years in LaLa land to break even. And that's not even taking into consideration the Cost of Living.

I don’t think Barnes lies. He’s brutally honest, almost to a fault.

Dont think he lied , just used a potential job as a negotiating tactic pretty much what any of us would have done. He just played Flummo like a cheap fiddle.
He said that he was probably going to UCLA if not for the buyout. UCLA wouldn’t pay it. If you take him at his word, then he was absolutely considering it. It’s ok though because UCLA is a blue blood to his generation. In hindsight though, he loves UT.
