Alvin Kamara was hanging out at practice this morning. Former Vol Byron Young plans to be at Pro Day tomorrow, just to hang out. Joey Aguilar was making the rounds this morning on campus. Jalen McMurray was here as well as most of the Pro Day guys will be making their way to campus today for the showcase tomorrow afternoon.
One note here, guard Wendell Moe Jr. is not expected to go through spring drills. There was a thought he would be out there in the back-half of spring practice, but that is likely not to happen now. Nothing new, just no sense in pushing a veteran back from offseason procedure when he is clearly a starter in fall.
Quarterbacks were repping pocket presence this morning while we were out here. Faizon Brandon showed great presence in the pocket, keeping his eyes down field and moving his feet well to avoid pressure. It looked natural. George MacIntyre was accurate with the football in this drill as well, though it was throwing to a staffer standing still.
e.cainThe running backs were working half speed, going through run fits and working off pads in front of them, simulating the offensive line. DeSean Bishop was coaching up the other running backs during the drill.
Quarterbacks didn’t throw any routes on air during the periods open to the media again. Same takeaways as usual, you can tell the difference in arm strength and the zip on the ball when George MacIntyre and Faizon Brandon are throwing. No quarterback will be named in the spring, but as far as the physical traits, those two continue to stand out.
David Sanders Jr. is just a completely different-looking player right now compared to this time last year. You’d expect that from a freshman to sophomore jump, but he’s moving extremely well for how much weight he’s put on.
The evolution of Ethan Davis from a pass-catcher to an all-around tight end is pretty incredible.
r.sylviaThere was a lot of work on passing coverages with presnap motions and dropping into zones among the safeties and linebackers. Again, not reading too much into the order of reps or even positions, but the first group was TJ Metcalf and KJ McClain at safety and Dejuan Lane at STAR. Second was Edrees Farooq and Isaiah Hardge at safety.
Watching practice on Monday morning were defensive backs Jalen McMurray and William Wright and quarterback Joey Aguilar, who is expected to do some throwing on Tuesday nearly three months removed from the surgery to remove the tumor from his arm. The defensive linemen turning pro have been doing workouts on the indoor field in the past week.
Another special guest at Monday’s practice: New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara, who talked to Josh Heupel for a bit during one period of work.
We also spotted injured defensive lineman Daevin Hobbs at practice for a moment. He is using a knee scooter to get around and has his left foot in a boot. It’s the same foot he injured in preseason camp when he missed five games last season.
The safeties worked on some coverage looks at a walk-through pace with Anthony Poindexter overseeing the work. The first trio out there was Michigan transfers TJ Metcalf and Tevis Metcalf and Penn State transfer Dejuan Lane. The next trio was Edrees Farooq, Sidney Walton and Colorado transfer Isaiah Hardge. Sophomore Dylan Lewis and freshmen KJ McClain, Jowell Combay, Joel Wyatt and Luke Thompson all got reps.
p.brownThe quarterbacks again worked on their pocket-presence drills with Joey Halzle emphasizing how his guys went through his progressions while keeping their feet in position to throw accurately. The quarterbacks would have to step up in the pocket after a count or two and scan three different targets. When one of those targets raised their hands, the quarterbacks had to get their lower body in position to throw the football accurately with some zip.
Halzle was giving freshman Faizon Brandon some pointers after one of his reps.
