— In a move that has sent shockwaves through the collegiate sports world and left the Tennessee fanbase in utter disbelief, Athletic Director Danny White announced Wednesday that the University of Tennessee is officially cancelling its storied Lady Vols Women’s Basketball program, effective immediately.
The funds previously allocated to the program, which boasts eight national championships, will be redirected to establish a varsity Bocce ball team, a decision White calls "a strategic pivot toward the future of recreational precision sports."
"We are constantly evaluating our portfolio to ensure we are maximizing our resources and aiming for national championships," White said during a somber press conference at the Food City Center. "Lady Vol basketball has a legendary history. But as we look at the changing landscape of collegiate athletics and the need to foster, shall we say, a more relaxed yet highly competitive environment, we believe Bocce ball represents the ultimate ‘Everything School’ athletic endeavor."
The Lady Vols, a program built into a national powerhouse by the late Pat Summitt, recently concluded a challenging season under head coach Kim Caldwell. While many expected a restructuring of the basketball program, few anticipated its complete elimination.
White, who previously spearheaded major financial successes at UCF and Tennessee, assured donors that the high-energy, fast-paced intensity previously seen on the basketball court would be translated to the bocce court.
"We are looking for elite precision, intense focus, and high-stakes maneuvering," White said. "The Lady Vols name will live on, but instead of full-court presses, our student-athletes will be focused on the full-court, or rather, the 60-foot pitch. We anticipate huge viewership for high-stakes, televised bocce."
The announcement has already sparked outrage among supporters, with thousands calling for a reversal of the decision. Fans had already expressed frustration following a difficult 2025-26 season, but few imagined this drastic turn.
"We want to be trendsetters," White added. "We’ve done football, we’ve done baseball. Now, it’s time for the sport that allows for maximum tactical analysis while utilizing arguably less energy."
The newly formed Bocce team is expected to begin recruiting immediately, with the Thompson-Boling Arena potentially being retrofitted with state-of-the-art turf courts. Meanwhile, Lady Vols players currently on the roster have been given the option to transition to the new sport or enter the transfer portal.
