Forgive me for this negative post but I love my Vols and this years season is hurting and as hard as I try to make allowances for losing the last five games (when each game something stupid happened) but a sequence of events last night was simply head scratching.

4-1 up in the 8th and Arvidsson, one of SECs best, walks the No 8 batter. He clearly didn't have his "A" game tonight with no command whatsoever specially of the fast ball. For any pitcher sometimes its just not there so you yank him.
But he allowed to continue with the 9th hitter and exactly the same result, you have now walked 8 & 9.This is definitely not his night so don't waste 7 great innings from Mack there is a range of options still in the ballpen.
What!! he is still pitching? and no surprise he has loaded the bases with none out with 3 straight walks. How could you let Arvidsson stay in the game so long? The only person more shocked than me would be Frank Anderson if he was watching
Noooo still no change and he is still pitching, and was really lucky that a blooper didn't clear Short Stop for a couple of runs.

After last night and add that to the four straight back breaking losses the confidence in holding on to any lead must have totally evaporated. Now look at the regression this season in Newstrom, Abernathy, Marin, Brown, and Krenzel (confidence seems to be total shot) and Rhudy who look about as stable as Joe Biden. I know I should be patient but right now I cannot come to any other conclusion other that Coach Elander just might be way in over his head. Please please prove me wrong

Maybe this a warning to all the Coach Barnes detractors, appreciate him whilst he is here as it is fast becoming clear how good Vitello was.

Sometimes the truth huts, LV. You need not apologize. Watching the game on t.v. yesterday with my wife, I cringed when we left the bases loaded & remarked, "That will come back to haunt". Indeed, next inning Tennessee walked the bases loaded & LSU hit a grand slam. Coach has gotta jack this group up.

I still can't believe you throw a steady diet of fastballs to fastball hitters. That's what they want so it becomes batting practice for them if you don't have pinpoint control - ie: inside corner at the knees, outside corner at the knees, inside corner on the hands. No change ups, no sliders, no curve balls, no cutters......just serve up a fastball to them somewhere in the hitting zone. Didn't see any pitching selection strategy during crunch time and the end result was predictable. Also, NEVER let anyone walk the bases full. That's what the next man up is for.

I know this stinks right now, but it's not so unexpected. I'm the king of grumps and negativity, but let's be honest. This is a young team overall. Lotta guys are still making the transition into bigger roles and struggling. There's no real dominant upperclass leadership to pick this team up and carry it through. On top of that, you've got a young, first time head coach replacing a charismatic and extremely popular coach in Vitello. PLUS, you lose arguably the best pitching coach in college baseball. Yeah, this year was always gonna be a struggle.

We might figure it out this year, but odds are that this is just one of those seasons that humbles and reveals character. Sophomores today become juniors tomorrow. Look at guys like Burke and Moore. Took a bit of time. They had the advantage of watching and learning from veterans. This team....not so much. Witching won't change the situation so the best move is just to support this bunch while they hopefully grow up. Maybe we sneak into the NCAAT and maybe we don't. Right now just they just need to focus on themselves and not outside gloom and doomers like me lobbing insults and complaints at them. I'm just gonna enjoy the moments this bunch can give me this season. No expectations.

Edit: Gawd....I can't believe the positivity drivel I just posted. So out of character.

The one glaring weakness is our retooled pitiful bullpen and their inconsistencies , if we keep rolling with this same group it’s gonna be more disappointment our next big problem is our plate discipline isn’t helping horrible we swing at so many pitches out of the strike zone it’s ridiculous , Chapman’s strike out with the bases loaded was horrible , he never seen a strike , it’s ok to swing early but you have to swing at strikes , this teams in a world of trouble as our schedule only gets tougher

This is a relatively young team and a new coaching staff that was a recipe for disaster from day 1. It is frustrating how guys like Reece and Ardvison that should be leaders on this team can be so inconsistent but that is baseball.

I think Josh needs to shake the line-up up today and send a message to a few of the guys in the top of the line-up that you have to perform to stay there.

Unfortunately, this may be a season we’ve not seen on Rocky Top in years. We could very well miss the regionals unless we catch lightning in a bottle and beat teams rated higher than us in the conference. In Baseball, anything is possible but we are staring down some really difficult conference games. Right now this team is totally lost how how to close out a game. I’ve really never seen anything like it.

Reese was 3-5 with a HR/multiple RBIs and an outstanding HR robbing catch in RF.

I wish all our players were that “inconsistent.”

I like Josh and yes there’s going to be a learning curve but it appears TN doesn’t have the confidence and swagger of past teams. This came from CTV. I want CJE to be successful but if Tony said I made a mistake and wanted to come back and Josh agreed to be associate head coach again, I would be ecstatic. It won’t happen but one can dream.

Side note: Tony is getting chubby and looks 10 years older already.

Having struggles with a sophomore heavy team is completely predictable but I would have never guessed we could blow so many late inning leads in a row. LOL.
Makes me curious as to how the decisions were made when Frank, Tony and JR were in the dugout.

I’m assuming Kirby was out in the bull pen under both regimes.

Elander IS over his head. When I heard that Mike White was going to meet with the team and get their input on a new head coach, I had a lot of concerns. He went with what they wanted and here we are. Major college programs are a tough place for on the job training. That’s the path we are on. Hopefully these lessons get learned quickly.
