Was anybody else a Nolan Richardson fan?

Growing up, I loved Arkansas. But really, I loved what “40 Minutes of Hell” felt like. It didn't matter the year or the players. It was the continuous identity. I didn’t understand all the schemes etc, but I understood this: you absolutely don’t want to see us on the court. Period.

I felt the same about Lady Vols basketball under Pat Summitt. When we stepped on the court, you knew one thing -> This was about to be a problem.

There's a real psychology behind identity and belief. Teams perform better when there’s a clear shared identity and belief. When it feels like "we've got something that you don't". That creates confidence, cohesion, edge. People want to be part of it. Players, fans, everybody.

That used to be Tennessee:
  • First of all - we’re the Lady Vols
  • Second of all - we’ve got Pat Summitt (AND YOU DON'T)
  • Third of all... we’re about to impose our will
We need THAT swagger back. That “dawg.” That sense of psychological invincibility. We might not have the wins yet, but we do have a system.

So I was thinking… at its best, when this system is clicking, what does it feel like to play us? What’s that dawg identity/mentality we can rally around?
  • 40 Minutes of Hell (I know I know but I had to say it)

Coach Yo has “Dictate & Disrupt”. You already know what’s coming and it still doesn’t matter. It's coming! Every year South Carolina has some pretty good ones. But, their defense - "Seatbelt Gang/Crew" - stands out b/c Raven in particular is about to lock you up.

That's the goal right? You know what we do. You know we’re coming. No, we aren't the old TN. We're a whole new version. And you still can't deal with it.

What would y'all call what we are bringing from the time we hit the court? (At its absolute best. I.e. think about the good wins over the 2 years and Kim's first season)

Cheerleaders jumping, pom poms flying,
Hear their chant.

R U D 2? R U D 2?

WE R! WE R!

Is nostalgia good for arthritis?

Egh. Can't imagine people rallying around this one. Hopefully not what it feels like at its best, Bravo. 😆 -10.
Yep nothing works unless players execute your fundamental responsibilities. Last year's team executed the defense better with athletes that weren't as gifted as this year's team. I've seen the press not be effective the entire first half and just throttle a team in the second half. It wasn't because the team forgot how to break it it was because the defense wasn't doing there jobs. But some want you to think they finally ran through the brick wall at half time. You still have to have the horses to beat the best of the best.

when she shows me what the actual system is then i will believe we have a system. subbing every two minutes isnt a system. watching the other team run past our press for layups isnt a system. and if there was a real problem in the locker room then why in the hockey sticks didnt she address it and get rid of the problem when it started. im sorry you are the head coach and you are supposed to instill leadership in these girls and you didnt even stand up for what you are trying to do. So i dont believe all this about a coach undermining her at every step unless she was completely ignorant to what was happening. i have no respect for someone who cant stand up as the boss and take charge. ive said it many of a time on here. She would be shown on the sideline during games with a deer in the headlight look like she had no clue what to do next. PS would have met these girls at halfcourt and still been on their ass heading into the locker room if they showed so little heart and fire. You want to run a system then fight for it and the players will fight for it. Dont stand there like you are afraid that scolding someone for being lazy or missing an assignment is not your job.

First off, @SummittSoul, I love your effort here! Okay, okay. Everyone isn't on board yet. Too much fun to wallow in negativity and bitterness. Avoids disappointment. Your suggestion points toward hope, a goal and a path and the feeling the LVs can walk the path and navigate any obstacles. I'm there. Lots more fun. Thank you for starting the thread. And, yup, there will be naysayers, and they may be right (looking at you, @glv98! :)), and I'll be disappointed if their predictions prove true. But, between now and then, I'd like to engage in a little appreciative inquiry, try to see possibilities, the mighty oak in the acorn. So, good on you!

Now, as to your question. Something is niggling around in my brain that Kim may have actually put words to this somewhere, but I can't remember for sure. Maybe someone else can?

Assuming you had the right horses and executed the fundamental responsibilities - what would you call it?

I feel your frustration and your pain deeply and I know where it comes from. We all want to see them compete hard and win. I get it.

I feel like you have a potential name/theme in here somewhere. It's all about heart, fire and fight. 40 minutes of that - you'd successfully sell a lot of people.

I didn't know she'd put words to it. Now I'm going to go looking for it. Very curious to see what she calls it in "shorthand". I need it to be clear and intimidating and to INSTANTLY give people a taste of the feeling they're about to experience when they see us.

Thanks for the fun idea! First quick thoughts to help kick this off:

Heat Force
Hustle and Hell
Basketball badassery
The Press and Stress

Maybe something will inspire something else. I’ll start thinking on it!

Ok I love "Hustle and Hell". Let's Go! Favorite so far. +20.

The Press and Stress is also nice. Clever. Makes me sweat a little just thinking about it. I can picture it flowing well in a sentence when I'm battling someone in social media comments, "You don't want this press and stress we're about to put on you". See? Top tier for practical utilization. + an additional 10.

Discipline team work. DTW 😉 . Just like playing zone defense it takes discipline not to get moved away from your responsibility. Speed and agility helps in all aspects of the game. I truly think the biggest problem she has is the subbing patterns don't think it's used for the right reasons. Should only sub out the ones not performing there responsibility and correct them when they come out.

Nothing to worry about from a naysayer like me Retro. I know when I’m defeated. All I’m doing is “wallowing in negativity and bitterness” because who would do that after a historically brutal collapse of the program they’ve loved and followed for 40 years?

Just enjoy the W and take a victory lap You guys 100% won the day. Your coach is staying and she said the miracle system she invented will be implemented more totally than ever. The cancers who victimized poor Kim are not only all gone, they're thoroughly dissed as disappointing players and people. The new all heart hustle and dedication players who only take money because they’re forced to are starting to enter the building. AD narrative of what happened is now the gospel.

Call the system Kim’s Magical Miracle

You know why I like this. It's an onion.

Layers man.
- DTW: rolls easily off the tongue
- acronym with real substance and meaning beneath. Discipline + team work. Winning combination and critical to success in this or any system
- 3. DTW is also a nod to Detroit and our very own RICKEA JACKSON. Like Rickea, Detroit is not to be played with.

See Vols, you have layers. +10. You're on the board.

40 years of showing up for the Lady Vols is no small thing. That kind of loyalty and commitment says more than any message board point ever could. You’re here because you care, because you want the best, and because somewhere underneath all of this, there’s still hope.

While this specific post was meant to be lighthearted and hopefully channel some of the passion that's kept us all coming back for all of these years, I know that part of being a fan is that it's not always all sunshine. Here with you my friend.

Nope, that specific post was meant to admit defeat and acknowledge the current facts. It literally is what it is.

also, aware no one wants to hear it at this point. So I’ll do my part by not commenting on the quality of incoming players and staying out of it unless directly addressed as in the post I responded to.
