It'll probably be two months before we start hearing even hints of how the new team is coming together ON the court. So while the new team is replacing the chip on their shoulders with barbells, may be a good time for us has beens and once weres to enjoy a leisurely topic for a change.

When I think of movies that involve assembling a team, the first three (four) that came to my mind were The Magnificent Seven (1960)--an adaptation of Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai (1954)-- Kubrick's The Killing (1956), and Huston's The Asphalt Jungle (1950). Classics, all.

What are your favorite "assembling a team" movies, and maybe why?

As everyone knows, the OP only thinks he's titled and defined a thread. Soon enough, the thread charts its own course.
So, if you can't beat them (and you can't assemble your own roster)...

Fastbreak was great, saw it in the theater! Kicking and Screaming is great, too. You gotta love a movie with Robert Duvall AND Mike Ditka!

Good choices above.

Others...
Hoosiers...Hackman and Hopper help build a winning team
Glory Road...story of NCAA champion Texas Western
Bull Durham...best movie GM ever, with apologies to Brad Pitt and James Gammon
Gone in 60 Seconds...team assembled for car thievery
Draft Day...classic Costner sports movie
Slap Shot...Paul Newman paired with the Hanson brothers, and a strip tease on the ice...what's not to like?

True confession: I was not much of a movie person in my early years. A class at the University of Louisville under Kentucky's "free for seniors" programs sparked my interest, and I'm watching more. I've only seen 7 or so of these, all of which I'd gladly watch again. So, between this and watching Caitlin and the Fever, I might make it to dove season, and thence to basketball. (Football? Well... It's been a little iffy lately. Loved Huep's early years, but...)

The Commitments – 1991. Wherein Jimmy Rabbite, an unemployed Dublin boy, decides to put together a soul band made up entirely of the Irish working class. As he explained it,“ The Irish are the Blacks of Europe. And the Dubliners are the Blacks of Ireland.”

Maybe the best movie I watched just once. And I bought the soundtrack. The guy who played the vocalist was only seventeen when they filmed.
