Derek Owings weight room progression from January to May

I’m looking forward to the progress of certain individuals, in terms of (good) weight gain…namely Ethan Utley, Isaiah Campbell, George MacIntyre, and Christian Gass. Nathan Robinson could stand to add some good weight as well.

I wonder if they’re trying to put more muscle on Sam Pendleton. He seemed a little light last year.

Good stuff. Anyone on here had a Dexa scan?

What a DEXA Scan Measures (That Athletes Need)

Here’s what you get from a DEXA scan that’s highly relevant for athletic performance:

Lean muscle mass (per region: legs, arms, trunk)

Body fat % (total and regional)

Visceral fat (linked to inflammation + injury risk)

Muscle symmetry (crucial for injury prevention)

Bone mineral content

These insights can highlight imbalances (e.g., dominant leg vs. non-dominant leg) or show if you're losing lean tissue during a cutting phase.

On a team of 100 players, I would have expected way more than 218 pounds of fat loss.
More than half of the team is sub 10 percent body fat. So, they don’t have much fat to lose.

The truth is that 80 percent of the total team fat loss is probably concentrated to 20 percent of the players.

Feel better?

The plan is for EVERYONE… across the board. Bigger faster stronger

I believe dexa scans include water weight as lean mass. So the fat loss stat is pure fat
Oddly, in addition to a football program, UT also has a university which has specialized labs which study body composition. Who knew it wasn't just a place where they play football, eh?

Tennessee Football made a splash hire by bringing in Derek Owings as the head strength and conditioning coach this past offseason. But one other important behind-the-scenes hire that Tennessee made around the same time was Director of Football Nutrition Katie O’Connor.

Owings and O’Connor’s roles go hand-in-hand as the two lead the charge into creating better, stronger, and healthier athletes to perform on the football field. Tennessee highlighted on Wednesday that since the duo took over in January, the Vols’ program has seen more than 850 pounds of muscle mass gained and more than 200 pounds of fat lost amongst the entire team.

Don't watch if you're hungry 👇
