My question is whether the QB competition is real. We all know coaches can script scrimmages and personnel to favor one player over another. Do you (average fan) think they’d never do that? Well, you’re a fool. Yes, FB is the “better” prospect. Still, this staff wanted a transfer starter and was willing to pay. They just couldn’t close the deal when the market went way north of what was expected. They already have over $3 million tied up in QBs. Hell, FB is a way better “prospect” than the Mendoza ever was. Even up to the end of his Junior year.
Here’s the reality. This is a 7 win team by all prognosticators. If so, the fan base is going to agitate. Not a little, but a lot. They are spending top 10 lmoney by all accounts, but have the lowest odds of ANY top 10 spender. And it isn’t close. Indiana who has the 4th best odds to win it all, is spending half of what Tennessee is in 2026. Don’t believe these numbers? Fine. Enjoy your entertainment district, because that’s what you’re getting. The problem is that UTs money isn’t tied up primarily in its starting 22, or proven production. It’s tied up in the future. It’s tied up in hope.
Heupel has failed to maneuver the NIL waters and the AD is making excuses that we aren’t tampering due to probation. It was basically a confession that if the current sanctions weren’t in effect, we’d be tampering. So, he’s recruited heavier at the high school level. Sadly, this hasn’t stopped the massive outflow of transfers. Teams like UGA and OSU have the lowest roster turnover. They recruit well and develop their talent. The UT roster has been a revolving door in comparison, but unlike Ole Miss or Indiana, it hasn’t been with an equal inflow of experienced and proven production. Our highest paid transfer has barely played and is having a personal crisis that calls into question his future. This came at the expense of multiple players at the same position leaving. Players that likely would have made a big step due to their experience and the new S&C coach. Oh well.
So, the pitch is going to be the future. You will begin to hear a narrative develop from state run radio and its compliant minions about 2027. And Faizon is the poster child for this movement. It’s not going to be the skinny kid who can’t gain weight. The coaches, consciously or subconsciously are going to put their finger on the scales. Whether that involves what plays are installed or favored in scrimmages (or not), one on one attention, or personnel placed around the QBs, Faizon is going to be favored. If you don’t think it’s true, then you didn’t watch the Joe Milton story. Do you really think Milton was really that superior in practice? Or, did they practice and run plays to his strengths, while Hendon was put in more difficult situations? You don’t think that happens? Well, you’re a cuck.
