Mattingly tribute to Johnny

Unfortunate ending to a great career. As I have said one of the few onboard who actually saw Johnny play I appreciate all he did for the University as a player and coach. But in the end he was hoisted on his own petard by his arrogance and ego.

I often wonder if the administration and stakeholders would have been as patient with Johnny, given today’s salaries and expectations. He arrived in 77 and after the 79 season, he dipped down a few years and really didn’t get it rolling until 83.

To those of us scratching our privates wondering what the hell a "petard" is, I did some diggin and am well, blown away... by it's double entendre. Thank you SavannahBayVol for increasing our vocabulary!

Johnny would have been shown the door in year 4 (1980) if he had to coach with today's constraints and pressures of NIL and 'Win Now".

Yea, those first two games were heartbreaking losses. Glenn Ford fumbles on 1st and goal from the 1 yard line versus Georgia after we were leading, if I remember correctly, 15-0. The next week, we have the ball driving for a potential game winning FG versus USC, throw an interception, and USC kicks the game winning FG instead.

I had a Shakespeare class at UT and studied that play in depth. Must say I don’t remember that phrase, but kudos to the OP.

Remember who intercepted the pass?

Even after keeping him after the 80 season he should have been fired after the first 2 games of the 81 season.(UGA 44-0 and USC(west) 43-7. But he lucked out with a weak schedule and some unbelievable breaks to end up with the weakest 8-4 team we ever had.

Yea, the former Titan head coach, Fisher?

The 1980 team was loaded everywhere except QB. Just got some bad breaks.
