Landon Mack status??

To me it looks similar to the AJ Russell deal where Tony pretty much deferred all the decisions to the player, his parents and the Dr’s and I think E is doing the same thing here , I think missing one week isn’t that big of a deal but two weeks is concerning , I’m hoping Mack is available but too optimistic right now

I still don’t get that whole deal. While TJ is hard to diagnose symptomatically, MRIs are incredibly good at finding not just tears, but inflammation related specifically to TJ. That ain’t healing itself. Why Russell didn’t immediately get the procedure is still a mystery.

Partial tears are common (pretty much all baseball players have some amount of tearing/damage to the UCL). How significant of a partial tear typically dictates if/when TJ is necessary. If velo/command are still there and the pain/discomfort are tolerable, most put off TJ so they can keep playing. Many go the rest of their career in this situation. A week or two here, a month there, long break in off season and they manage it. If it's not a full rupture and the velo remains, there is always a chance of not having to miss 12-15 months after taking some time off and re-evaluating.

Assuming that's what is going on with Landon; given the situation with AJ and how that worked out, if it's not pretty much back to normal, it would be in Landon's and UT's interest to go ahead and have TJ/internal brace and miss next season. It would give UT the clarity to know the roster situation ahead of time as well as give him the option to focus on next year's draft or plan to stick around one additional year to show MLB teams that he's healthy and effective.

Hopefully he just tweaked something and it's a muscular/inflammation issue completely unrelated to UCL damage.

@chuckiepoo here is one of the recent quotes from Elander on Mack’s status I was referring to:

“At this point, it’s really still a day-to-day deal. I don’t want to speculate at all. I know there’s a bunch of people in his corner helping him out and making sure he’s in a good spot and can make a good decision one way or another. We’ll give him some time and lean on some professionals to make that decision when the time is appropriate.”

It seems benign enough but when you compare this to how he talks about Chapman’s baseball to the face and how he’s on track to return, it doesn’t paint on optimistic picture of Mack pitching again when Elander talks about “people in his corner” and “leaning on professionals.” It all just sounds very bleak and like they know what the answer is they just aren’t ready to say publicly yet.

Thank you for clarifying. I agree that it sounds like the decision has been removed from the hands of the staff.

I’m curious if UT has cleared him but his own team of advisers haven‘t. He and his family obviously have every right to be cautious especially with his long term health. However, agents tend to think about things in $ and not necessarily sense. I hope Mack returns fully healthy next season and earns a 1st round pick. He’s ridiculously talented.

Ain't this new "college" landscape grand? It's all about NIL and pro prospects now. Wonder why they don't deep six this sign. Doesn't seem applicable these days....

Assuming it’s connected to UCL, Brace surgery is 6-9 month recovery, meaning the sooner they act, the more likely he’s pitching next year.

In General’s Quarters this week, said Mack was day to day with generalized arm fatigue. Chapman also day to day but expected to play.

Also it said Tennessee was projected as a #2 seed in either the Hattiesburg or Chapel Hill region.

Maybe we stop taking baseballs to the face and finally get rested/healthy. Don't think we have the pitching to make a lot of noise in the tournament, but baseball is funny. Sometimes teams come out of nowhere and I wouldn't mind seeing is put on some glass slippers.
