Has Brandon Won the QB Job? Sports Source Digital Network

Way too much offseason left to say that either has won the job, IMO. This is just something for media and fans to speculate on. When you have two unproven QBs, it's to be expected.

Having said that, whichever one starts (or if it's a Brent Schaeffer/Erik Ainge type of situation) it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

Based on what? I don’t recall spring ending with FB being named the starter or being noticeably better than GM. Since spring concluded what would be the basis for him being awarded the job other than just media/fan speculation? I suspect we will enter fall camp with a QB competition, the starter being named at the earliest 2 weeks before the first game.

Heupel won't name a QB until close to opening day but what those guys were discussing is media chatter, not fan speculation, that G-Mac was performing below expectations.

As the first guy asked said, it's likely these little media "leaks" that are being talked about were attempts by staff to "apply a little kick in the butt" to G-Mac for the competition because they want more out of him than they're getting.

Does that mean Faizon is close? We cannot possibly know nor does the media in Knoxville know. It might or it might just be coaches doing what coaches do: trying to motivate players.

I thought we outlawed off season speculation on starting QB's? IMO...in late May it way too early to know who will start at QB. If i'm being judgement day honest...both QB's will get serious playing time. I know...two QB's rotating then you have zero starting QB's...but its been done (occasionally successfully) by really good programs before. Otherwise...we have no clue yet. JMO

Chris Low and Trey Wallace don't seem like guys who would just throw that out, but I sure wouldn't have thought Faizon would have it all but wrapped up before summer starts.
Those guys have to make a living, too. All they're really doing is reporting hearsay from anonymous source(s) that are said to be in a position to know. Nobody will remember it if they turn out to be wrong. And if anyone does, they'll just say they were reporting what they were told. It's weak journalism, IMO.

Praytell, what's "strong journalism" to you? Scheduling an interview for Heupel to tell them exactly nothing about the QB situation, which is what will happen if they do?

What could a journalist POSSIBLY do other than be a mouthpiece for whatever the school officially releases if they don't have anonymous sources?

The only thing outlawed on VN is thread titles with only a players name

Heupel should try to tighten up the leaks, assuming that they are real. It’s not ideal for sensitive areas information like this to be revealed through leaks.

I see what you're saying and I share your cynicism. However, I do think an interview with someone associated with the team (the head coach, using your example) is better journalism than a rumor from an anonymous source. But that's just my crazy ol' opinion!

They’ve never been above spreading sourceless rumors. If you can’t report the source, then it isn’t coming from the horse’s mouth - which means it is subjective to change and no one would be going back on their word in doing so.

Alas, we shouldn’t name call.. So the rest of you people believe whatever makes you happy.

Believe rumors might have said Tony V was leaving for San Fran, however Tony said no decision had been made. Maybe enough rumors and G Mac can leave this summer and get a head start on a new team.
Rumors sell better than hard facts. As tight lipped as Heupel is in press conferences, I don’t see his staff leaking anything.

If you ask me, true journalism is firsthand witness and sources who agree to go on the record. Anything else may as well be fantasy.

I just hope we're in a position of picking "best of the best", instead of having to settle for the best we have on our team, which may not be up to par. I will say, all other things being equal (like ball security), that having a QB who can run in JH offense is a blessing, and if GMac doesn't win the job, this is probably why.

That's called being a mouthpiece for "The Man" or program or whoever. Why read on the news what the school or government or corporation releases? There's no need for the First Amendment if all you expect from a journalist is to read what they're told by "The Man" they can say.

I don't understand the rush to know who will start? Let's get all 3 of them as prepared as possible and keep the carrot extended. Let it play out in fall camp competition.

Unless he gets hurt Faizon will be the starter
I agree. But this is football. And as we have seen in the past, "getting hurt" is one play away. Just based upon what I read, what I hear, and what I feel, I hope Faizon Brandon proves to be solid gold. Or if George MacIntyre takes the field? I hope HE is solid gold. Hell it might be Ryan Staub. I will be surprised, but not shocked if they put in Mason Phillips. But no matter who is the starter? You are one bad play away from asking "Who's next". And then whoever the answer is? He will then be one MORE bad play away.

I am going to support whoever the coach gives the nod to. But I am also going to support the other 3 guys. Because they are all just one bad play away.
