That’s what I don’t get. How have we not earned the respect to get a better matchup? They gave Texas a better draw for goodness sake.
Probably because we have enough of a gauntlet of a non-conference schedule already. Wouldn't be surprised if Barnes requested a team like FSU.

Texas is ranked #9 in the ESPN way-too-early preseason poll, BTW.

Also, who did people want? FSU is arguably the 2nd best ACC team that’s going on the road in this challenge, it was our turn to host, weren’t many options to choose from as far as ACC teams whose turn it was to go on the road.

Tennessee should be solid favorites, but don't underestimate FSU. Second-year coach Luke Loucks has, arguably, a more talented roster this year, and last season's team gave Duke all they could handle in the regular season and in the ACC Tournament. They were one of six power conference teams in Division I to shoot more threes than twos (Alabama, Louisville, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Indiana were the others).

Our matchup makes sense to me. It looks like they try to balance out the matchups every year based on how good the teams are projected to be that year, and how recently they played the other teams. For the ACC, they start with their marquee programs, Duke and UNC, and then work their way down the list. So, starting with the Duke vs. UF (a recent champion with a lot of returning players) game makes sense.

Duke-Florida will likely be #1 vs. #2.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Tennessee said they were fine with hosting and it being a lesser opponent given our schedule
Do teams actually get to offer input on preferred opponents in these things?

Duke playing Florida seems like the obvious choice, but those teams played in it last year. I think we should have gotten them. But if we said we didn't want too hard of an opponent, then it makes sense we drew Florida State.

That formula hasn't been too successful against Barnes.

I didn’t have high expectations given how the perception of Tennessee has been when the conferences try to put together matchups.

Tennessee is seen as a Top 10-15 team so I guess I was hoping they’d pair us with an equivalent ACC team. It’s mostly a meaningless early season game, so I wouldn’t have been terribly upset with another road game if it meant a more appealing matchup.

Regardless, it’s not something I’m going to lose sleep over either way. Minor annoyance all things considered.

I know Texas is projected high but they haven’t proven they can reach that let alone sustain it while we have. It is possible Barnes said something like that though.

That’s not how it works though, teams alternate. So we were hosting, and we were gonna host a team that hosted last year, the options were pretty limited and all things considered we got arguably the best team of that available group outside of Duke.
