Sugar Bowl

Saw a highlight reel come up on my facebook feed from the 1986 Sugar Bowl when we beat the tar out of Miami, It’s crazy to me that we haven’t played in the Sugar Bowl in 35 years. Anybody else go to the 1991 Sugar Bowl against Virginia?
I didn’t but do remember watching it. It was a hyped game because Virginia had been ranked #1 at one point. Had a very large back. We didn’t lead the game till Tony Thompson dover over the top for the game winning TD. When I say dove, I mean that dude was airborne!

When Jeff Powell (a x-fer from William and Mary and track star) split the NFL bound Miami defensive backs for a 60+ yard TD, it was a thing of beauty.
"Jeff Powell came ROOOOAR-ing down the field..." (John Ward). We enjoyed that one in New Orleans!

Been to the Sugar 3 times:

71- Vols 34 Air Force 13 in a game that wasn't even that close.

86- Considering the level of competition and the margin of victory greatest win in UT football history.

91- Think the Vols spent too much time on Bourbon Street on New Years Eve and didnt wake up until the third uarter.

No but I did go to the 1986 game (I lived in New Orleans at the time). Great game! Nobody gave us a chance! I bet Testaverde still remembers it or maybe just the ceiling of the Super Dome 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Yes, attended both games. We throttled UM from the start as everyone knows. As far as the UVA game, bunch of elite types and their band sucked.

Actually, the UM beatdown didn't start until middle/late 2nd quarter.
Yea Miami struck first on their opening drive going up 7-0 pretty easily and it looked like we weren’t going to be able to hang with them, but Ken Donahue made adjustments and our defense dominated them from that point on and our offense started finding the end zone and it was ballgame. One of the best wins in our football history and probaly Johnny Majors greatest win as HC at UT. Other than that opening drive by Miami our defense just absolutely suffocated Testeverde and their offense. And of course the 60 yard run by Jeff Powell broke the game open. Daryl Dickey was remarkably poised in that game too and the second half of the season after taking over for T. Robinson. People forget though that Dickey was a 24 year old senior that year so he was pretty mature.

I remember listening to it on the radio but didn’t get to watch.

I was at the 86 Sugar Bowl as a 3 year old. Don’t remember the “in person” experience 😂

But I’ve watched that game a dozen times or so as an adult and watched highlights more than I’d care to admit LOL

Scored, mind you, with the assistance of a well executed and unexpected punt fake. They might not have scored at all if not for that.
