I know the coaches have repeated over and over about the importance of getting those 1st and 2nd downs and not cornering us into a 3rd and long situation.

Well, after these 2 games, I'm just gonna assume we will have a lot more 3rd and long situations.

So why not practice those situations consistently?

Why not? Because the value is in preventing 3rd and long rather than planning for it. The coaches (and most observers) recognize that the bang for the buck is not in 3rd and long.

What makes you think they don't?

I'm all but certain they do practice 3rd and long situations, as covering every situation is eminent in a fully prepared system.

I'm sure they have plays for 3rd and long. However, converting a 3rd and long is a slim chance.

In our two wins we converted 52% of 3rd downs. In our two losses we converted almost 36% of 3rd downs.

I'm sure they practice plays all the time to gain 10 yards. But with all the drops we are going to see a lot of 3 and longs

On the other hand our D is giving up way to many 3rd down conversions.

I kinda feel bad for the Defensive staff.

You prepare for Driskel all week.

He's in for 11 snaps.

Backup comes off the bench, is mobile.

Okay, lets change our entire gameplan for this. Offense, give us some time to make changes.

Offense turns ball over.

It happens. Okay, Short field guys, get out there and stop them, then we'll scheme.

Defense stops Florida with a 6 yard field to a FG. Win for D.

Offense turns ball over.

FFS, give us more than 30-45 seconds to make changes.

Defense holds Florida again.

Offense turns ball over.

:banghead2:

Defense is on field now for almost 11:00 of a 15:00 Quarter. Start dipping into depth which lacks experience, speed and talent.

Florida attacks Defense. Defense gives up 2 big plays but overall holds and puts the Offense into good positions to get points.

Offense turns ball over again.

Defense: :ermm:

Defense caused a turn over from a starting QB but ineffective against a junior never started QB. We will be seeing a lot of mobile QBs the rest of the year. Maybe not true runners but guys that can extend plays or will tuck and go if you give them five yards of open field.

UF: "Hey Vol, what are you doing with that gun?"

UT: "Helping you out."

UF: "What do you mean?"

UT: (loads gun) "You'll see what I'm talking about."

UF: "This is a bit weird."

UT: (pointing at own leg) "Watch".

BOOM!

UF: "Oh, ok....your friend did this last year. I get it. Will a friend of yours be back next year?"

UT: (moaning) "Probably".

You KINDA feel bad for the D? Reminded me of the Clawfense season. The D was awsome that year , but couldn't get to the sideline before the O had given it back.
First half Saturday was recurrence of that nightmare. My heart was breaking for those guys.

I think the D still needs some work on 3rd & long.
