When I was growing up in the seventies and eighties we were not always a power program either to say the least. However we were ALWAYS known as a 4th quarter team that did not give up a fight and often won in the 4th. Even when we lost we went down swinging hitting and struggling for every inch. Under Kiffin/Dooley we became a loser limp team psychologically that gave up when things went bad, and to be honest before Kiffin too. I can't completely blame those athletes that came to play and got caught in coaching politics, but I hated that worse then any record or win and losses.

I don't mind losing as much when I see guys slugging it out with everything they got for 4 quarters. (last Year Georgia for example...THAT was my TN Vols I love regardless of the final score) .....but damned if I can stand guys giving up on a game, with hands on their hips and that look of distraction. What matters to me more then anything in this game is that we be a 4th quarter team again.

I still say the greatest game Lenord Little ever played with UT was against Nebraska.....and we got trounced......I mean pasted...

However Little fought like a LION to the end, one play he appeared to jump over the offensive line like some sort of ancient bull dancer, just to get to the quarterback, it was one of the more impressive displays of effort I have seen regardless of the score...and even to the end there was nothing but hunger and intensity in his eyes. Sadly even then it wasn't true for the whole team.

Under Butch Jones I see hustle again, I see discipline, and even the right kinda swagger.....but what I want more then anything else tomorrow is 4 quarters of no holds barred effort no matter what the score says..... Remember the ND game? We have won in the 4th under much worse conditions then we will see tomorrow, and with much less talent. Don't dishonor the real Volunteers, because you don't get to put your hands on your hips and limp away usually in war... the real Volunteers are those numbers in the stadium of the men who died while in the service of their country. Those are the guys we represent. THOSE are volunteers.

yeah yeah I know TL:DR too serious...but the George Dickel has me nostalgic for the Tennessee I knew way back when.

I promise no more seriousness for awhile... :p

I know a lot of people will probably meltdown if we lose, but i won't be disappointed as long as they give it their all for Tennessee for 4 quarters.

I have to admit that when I first started reading your post, I thought, "Oh boy, another one of these." But I have to admit, you inspired me with the 4th quarter talk. I hope our coaches have some similar speeches to deliver tonight!

I honestly believe (and hope) that the coaches will not need to deliver a speech to beg for effort. The winning way is to instill that as a core value and reinforce it through the team's own leadership. I think the worm has turned and the light at the end of the tunnel is not another train.

I remember suffering through the 90s with OU. I still went to games and supported the team. Bob Stoops first year in 99 kind of parallels what you guys are seeing now. We started to see things turn around and started getting excited again. That's what I see in UT. The right coach getting the right players again. Great days are on there way back to Tennessee. You guys are a classy fan base. Aside from OU I tend to watch. UT and am going to witness the great transformation to a great team once again right along with you!

Thanks for the kind words. If Butch Jones can get through the next few years and recruit the depth needed, he should be here a good while. I want Tennessee football to be in the conversation again as contenders and personally, would like it just a little bit more if Coach Jones was there.

As for today, I hope it's an injury free game and a fun one to watch.

GO VOLS !!!

Graduating in 93 I never feared anyone. Sure we lost some games but we did fight until the end. I like the progress Butch has achieved, but the fight comes from soldiers, the generals just help guide the way. I hope we see that fight today , cause I then I'll really know the tide is turning on our program. Damn, what road we've been down.

Grew up with solid teams in the 60's, up and down in the 70's&80's, near dominance in the 90's, total collapse in the last 6 years, and a ray of hope now. Vol fans are durable, if nothing else.

I'm with u Nick. Keep it respectable 63 for 4 quarters while we continue to learn the scheme and restock top athletes. That should make any Vol fan happy for now.

I wish I could hear the conversations that Dillon is heading from Bill, Even and Elliott from Eric and so on... Those are probably more powerful then Jones could ever deliver.

I hate to say it but I developed a loser mentality. I have just been hoping and praying that we don't get blown out the last 4 or 5 years instead of having any confidence that we would win. "I hope its a close game", I would say to myself. I can feel the We gone whip dey azz mentality coming back. I'm ready to get back in the national spotlight. I'm ready for opponents to fear entering the state of Tennessee and pee their pants when they enter Neyland. I can feel it.

Great post OP. I think your point can be equally applied to both the program and the fans.

4th quarters of effort is expected, but a win is also expected. Defy the odds and get it done it's not impossible unless you think it is. Go Vols!!!

I'm probably one of the older posters here and live to watch college football. I keep an eye on the coaches and I truly believe coach Jones is one of the better coaches. Tennessee and the SEC are fertile recruiting grounds. You guys are coming back and sooner than later. If Stoops retired coach Jones would be one of the few I would want.
