Thus far UT has outscored opponents 48-31 in the 4th quarter and only allowed Alabama(3), UGA(14), South Alabama(7), and Florida(7) to score which means we shut out South Carolina, Oregon, Western Kentucky, and AP in the 4th. In the games we allowed points to be scored in the 4th we were only outscored by South Alabama.

While the scoring margin may seem somewhat small we need to keep in mind the severity of our lack of depth. Our starters are on the field more than they should be yet we are out performing teams late in games. This is a great sign for the future.

Good post Cody. I agree, once we get the talent and depth that Butch wants we're gonna be a force to be reckoned with. These stats show the adjustments and good coaching on his part. Patience!

Except for USCe and Western Kentucky, the other shut out games were long over, be it winning or losing.

I do agree that we seem to be better conditioned and play 4 quarters!

It's a lot better than the second half fade into oblivion from the last coaching staff.

Last year I seem to remember giving up, let me do some quick math, roughly infinity + infinity points in the 4th quarter.

This is a huge and very significant improvement. A lot of tell tale signs around this coaching staff that they know how to get it done.

To be fair, both the Oregon and Alabama games were long over by the 4th quarter and they were playing 2nd and 3rd teamers.

Last year we were outscored 14-3 by Alabama in the 4th.....game was over on the 3rd

Okay, so we've improved in facing the back-ups of a team when we've already been blown out. I guess everyone has got to be proud of something.

Teams were trying to kill the clock as well, to be fair.

That said I do think we're improving by a lot. Bama's second teamers are as good as most college's starters. Still got a ways to go but it seems we're headed in the right direction.

Oregon, yes. Bummers, no!

With less than 8:00 to go in the 4th (half over), Mc-beautyqueen-boy was still in the game passing on 3rd downs.

Which highlights the homer-dom expressed by the commentator (Danielson?) when he tried to compare bama's "blow out" victory to Oregon's beatdown of us. He called it a push in terms of common opponent. LOL. The O scored on 8 consecutive drives and sent half their team to the showers in the 3rd qtr.

It's not as different as you might think. For instance, UGA didn't score in the 4th quarter last year...although they put up 51 through 3 quarters. Similar to Oregon this year.

I think UT also outscored Miss State and USC in the 2nd half last year.

On the flip side were the UF, Mizzou, & Troy games were those teams were lighting up the scoreboard.

But overall, this D does look better prepared but it's not as drastic as you might think.

I so think this speaks to better conditioning, & next year, everyone on the team save for the Frosh will have been through 2yrs of it. Also, compared to what I have to imagine was a pretty dismal 4th quarter score totals & differential last year, I have to imagine this is a huge improvement.

As people have already posted, McCarron was in as were Norwood/Cooper in the 4th Quarter and Bama was passing (McCarron attempted 5 passes in 1 drive in the 4th) while up by 32 points.

Bama did not take their foot off the gas nor did they rest their starters.
