Ummm, no offense, but you are crazy if you don't list Barry Sanders as one of the top 5 RBs of all time. Jim Brown is a fine candidate as well.

1. Sanders
2. Brown
3. Payton
4 and 5. About 30 good candidates.

Thurman Thomas, but no Jim Brown, Earl Campbell, Gale Sayers, Eric Dickerson, or Barry Sanders?

Any of the five should be above Thomas. In fact, that is a pretty strong list of 5 by itself.

Wow, how did I forget about those? You could compile a top 6 of Brown, Campbell, Sayers, Dickerson, Sanders, and Payton in any order and call it a day.

Jim Brown is #1 by such a large margin that the debate begins with who's number 2.

The only reason I don't have Brown at #2 is because of the era he played in. Had Sanders played on a decent team and played through his prime, he would have crushed the record books.

Yes, but Jim Brown may have made bigger records if he had actually played until he wasn't physically gifted anymore.

Thank you Hat for laying down some good words.

Jim Brown
Watler Payton
Barry Sanders
O.J.(Like him or not, he belongs.)
Emmitt

i just can't put emmitt there. for the same reasons I think Cal Ripken is slightly overrated essentially. Yeah, Emmitt has his record. But it was more a durability issue than anything else. If Sanders hadn't left early, Smith wouldn't have even been thought of as best back of his era. He's a Hall Of Fame back, and I understand why some put him in there, I just can't do it.

So Emmitt's all time rushing record, 4 rushing titles, league MVP, Super Bowl MVP, and three Super Bowl rings dont qualify him?
