Coach Doug Dickey’s first year as coach , the Vols were 4-5-1. The following year the Vols were 8-1-2. Winning percentage jumped from .450 to .818.

Let's hope Coach Jones can replicate this feat.

I am expecting a similar turnaround this year. Butch did it at Cinci so...fingers crossed!

Unlike most I think this will be a turnaround year for Jones. Qb play should be improved. CBJ has a new line to mold to play his style of football. Wr and rb core are much improved. And we have a lot of talent coming in. 8 wins this year and a second place finish in the SEC east! GBO!

Dickey didn't have 6 top 25 teams on the schedule that year either. If we are just throwing out facts.

According to the final UPI poll for 1965 these were the rated teams on UT's schedule:
Alabama - 4th - score tied 7-7
Ga. Tech - (received votes in 11-20 on AP) - UT won 21-7
Mississippi - 17th - UT lost 13-14
Kentucky - 18th - UT won 19-3
UCLA - 5th - UT won 37-34
Tulsa - 16th - UT won 27-6
They played 6 top 20 teams and finished 4-1-1 against them. In 1965 the AP poll only counted the "Top 10" but ranked the next ten that received votes below them. The UPI poll ranked the "Top 20".
Tennessee finished 7th in both the AP and the UPI that year. Just throwing out facts. :)

Only 3 teams were ranked in the AP poll that year on the schedule (excluding the bowl team) granted they were all 3 in the top 10. Still not even comparable to the schedule to the upcoming season. There is probably 9 bowl teams on the schedule this year may be the toughest schedule UT has had in a few years.

I would not attempt to compare the teams on the 1965 schedule with the teams on the 2014 schedule. The athletes in 1965 (for the most part) couldn't carry the socks of the 2014 athletes. All I was stating was that the UPI poll (which was the other recognized poll in 1965) had 5 teams that UT played ranked in the Top 20 and the AP poll had one other team in its "others receiving votes" group for positions 11-20. I went to a couple of games in 1964 and 1965 and very well remember those teams. I never could forgive Dickey for bailing out on us and going to Florida, although I did understand it, and I didn't like it when he came back as AD.
Tennessee's 1965 schedule was probably considered a tough schedule for that time period though.

It also should be noted that we played only ten regular season games then, not twelve, so the percentage of games vs. elite competition is not quite so dissimilar when you take those facts into consideration.

Yes, but he wasn't playing the likes of Alabama, Oklahoma, Georgia or South Carolina with a bunch of freshmen and sophomores. Let's get real here VN.

Which part of "they played 3 top 10 teams" did you not understand?

A 10 game schedule with 3 top 10 teams is brutal.

I think everyone should go outside and do some yard work. Relating a season from 50 years ago to today shows we are all going a little stir crazy.

For those of us who have been watching the Big Orange play football for nearly 50 years (or more), there is nothing unusual about making historical comparisons.

Or a very young and thin OL and DL and a unproved QB, plus banking on a bunch of unproved Freshman, other than that we are doing pretty good.

Like someone said, Freshmen were not eligible then. I don't remember much about the OL and DL, but Dewey Warren was the qb in 65 as a Sophomore. That means that he had not taken a snap the previous year as a Freshman, so I would say that he was unproven.

The 65 Vols would beat up the current team. On offense the team was anchors by AA center Bob Johnson and tackle John Boynton. You also had Johnny Mills, Tennessee's best ever possion receiver and Austin Denney one of the top TE to play for UT. Dewey Warren was QB and he is better than the three we have now. TB Walter Chadwick was a good runner and Stan Mitchell was one of the top FBs to play for the Vols. The Vols defense was anchors by first team AA FranK Emanuel, LB Paul Neumoff, Jackie Fisher at DE, Jim Bates at LB, and AA punter Ron Widby. You are talking about a great Volunteer team.
