On September 11, 1973, a military junta, led by General Augusto Pinochet, overthrew the democratically elected government of President Salvador Allende. What followed was a 17-year dictatorship which tortured 40,000, killed more than 3000 and “disappeared” more than a thousand others. Hundreds of thousands were forced into exile.

The Nixon administration in the United States encouraged and supported the coup that paved the way for these atrocities.

Yeah,I don't think there's many that would disagree with you that overthrowing a democratically elected Allende and replacing him with Pinochet wasn't a black eye for the US looking back. That's because it was.

Why does Ras defend every communist regime in world history?

While that seems to be the case more often than not,I'll cut him some slack here as he's not wrong. The pro Russia stuff in the Ukraine thread is an entirely different story

He's defending China in another thread by claiming "you can't invade yourself" when talking about actions against Taiwan. I just side with whoever has the best merch and memes. Commies can't compete with this.

Yeah, I can't argue the "you can't invade yourself " argument. That's a bit out there for sure ha... While I agree about Ras with Pinochet, those memes get a good chuckle out of me 🤭

Of course it is. I don't disagree with you there as far as anything being black and white. This is similar to what happened a lot in Latin America with US involvement. The Contras come to mind as far as this is concerned, and the crimes they committed (Meaning two wrongs don't make a right even if they align with US interests.)

Right. Fifty years ago Americans were a lot more concerned about communism spreading than many (especially younger people) may appreciate now.

Unless you can foresee the future, unintended consequences are always a risk.

Pinochet, the Shah, and I think some other allies ran a one way shuttle for communists, socialists, and any assorted opposition. Maybe their colonels learned it at Ft. Benning.
I posted a story this weekend that pointed out how the coup leaders in Niger were trained at Ft. Benning...
