The article says the seven outgoing members may vote to dissolve the league, but I wonder if the incoming schools, if they still come, could just revive the league under the same brand.

Big East

As a UT fan, LOL at Memphis. :eek:lol:

I would think they would vote for dissolution to avoid the buyout fee.

Yeah. They don't want to pay their way out.

Ultimately, I think this is the right move for the Catholic schools. The Big East made these moves trying to salvage what could not be salvaged, and the biggest victims are the non-football members.

Back when they first went to 16 schools, with eight playing football and eight not playing football (today's seven and ND), they had two large groups who would never be on the same page regarding expansion.

Adding a bunch of non-football members when VT, Miami, and BC left did not serve the interests of the football members. And, the recent desperate moves to try to save the football league obviously do not serve the members who don't play football and are only there for a strong basketball league.

This weakens the profile of traditional basketball powers like Georgetown and Villanova and, to a lesser extent, Marquette.

I'm pretty sure the Big East is dead. As the article indicates, the 7 non-football playing schools will likely vote to dissolve the conference - it would be better for them to realign themselves with some other schools with high profile basketball/no football programs (Xavier, Butler, etc.) in a new conference.

I'm not sure what USF, Cinn, and Conn will do. My guess is that they'll join programs like UCF, ECU, UAB, Memphis, to form a league which plays both Div 1 football and basketball. Sucks for USF but until their football program gets off the mat, they aren't in any position to find a better conference to join.

Isn't this where Obama steps in to save everything?

It's been a long illness for the Big East.

You knows it's been dying for a while. You just pray for their sakes that it ends soon.

I'd say the Catholic schools just administered the last rites to the Big East on the way out. The remaining schools can't reconstitute themselves as anything other than a minor football conference.

I really hate this. The Big East was too big anyways but it stood for a lot when it comes to basketball.

From an ESPN blog chat today:

Kenny (VA)

Just to be clear. If the basketball schools vote to dissolve the league the whole league is dissolved including football.

Andrea Adelson (4:15 PM)

Well, that does not mean these schools would take their ball and go home. They would just have to form a conference among themselves with a different name.

If the Big East as it stands now officially gets dissolved, I wonder who gets to keep the name. The basketball-only schools wanting to leave have more of the original members.

The worst part of this all is that the MWC is a damn good bball conference. Seriously, though, what has SDSU really accomplished in this whole mess? They sacrificed this nationally recognized bball program for what may or may not be a few extra football $ and a rash of new conference members scattered across the United States. Does that make any sense? At least at Boise, we know they don't give a rats az$ about the oly sports, but SDSU is sacrificing a lot as far as they go. What have they really gained? Their fans are undre the impression being associated with the front range schools is somehow holding them back. They come off as really arrogant for having absolutly no tradition in any major sport.

No one is going to convince the Big East defectors that they are making a huge mistake. They feel as though they have somehow hit the lottery. I find it quite humorous that the Big East Homers think they can still get BYU. If they couldn't get BYU before the top teams left the BE what makes you think you can get BYU now? Boise is the only thing holding together the nBE at this point and I question how commited they are to staying in the nBE. With the TV deal shot and the travel costs going to be outragous, it's not worth it, what's the point in Boise staying?

Watching the Big East fall apart has been like watching one slow train wreck. I just can't believe how the nBE homers ignore the signs... they have been wrong on absolutely everything. Mountain West fans were labeled as butthurt or jealous but at the end of the day we have been right and they have not.

The estimates were as low as 40 million yesterday and according to Darren Rovell (who is part of the ESPN conspiracy) if the basketball schools leave the hit on the TV dollars could be as much as 50% of that. Worst case scenario the schools who want to form a new conference could be looking at only a 20 million dollar contract. Split between the 12 teams that would remain and who are commited that's not much moolah at all and when you factor in travel expenses some schools could actually pay the new conference money just to be a member. It's crazy but if Rovell is correct that's what we're looking at....lol

BE = the basketball version of SEC Football

Lot's of great tradition when it comes to basketball. I hope the strong basketball members form a league because matchups like Georgetown and Nova should continue.

Yeah, being a hoops first junkie it makes me sad that we will no longer see cuse/GTown, UConn/cuse, etc. The Big East tourney has always been one of my favorite couch events every February.
