One is not the loneliest number. This should keep the Vols focused on making Duck Soup in Eugene this week. Now all we need is Mark Amazed to say we are going to be blown out.

I think people are expecting too much of them, honestly. They won six games by seven or less last year and they ranked up there with Notre Dame in terms of luckiest teams. They aren't going to be as lucky this year.

Does the AP Poll have a purpose anymore, other than...it's the AP Poll? Wasn't it taken out of the BCS calculation?

They do still award a national championship. In fact, there's is the only NC on record for 2004.

It's kind of funny, most networks and publications use the rankings from the AP poll in their stories/graphics until the first BCS poll comes out.

I think Miami's overrated at 15. Beat #18 (which is probably about right for UF) at home after Florida outplayed them the whole game but gave them turnovers.

I think Wisconsin and Baylor are underrated in the 20-25 range. Think they will make a lot of noise in the Big Ten and Big 12 this year.

Pretty much nope. It's just seems a lot of people to like to see it more because, if I were to guess, something out of either a) it's the default rankings espn uses on all its football related broadcasts, b) people don't like the BCS which its no longer a part of, c) it's famous, historic, and most college football fans have grown up with it...and people love familiarity, or d) some people feel it's more accurate than the coaches poll since the coaches can't watch all the games....maybe something out of or combining one or more of those

(These are just some hypotheses of my own; I'm not saying by any means that any of these are the reason why "it's like this.")

But, while they do give out their own awarded championship still, it's usually pretty much just whoever the BCS title game winner was.

...but for all it matters, they could even put UT at number 1 and it wouldn't realy effect who's playing for the national title.

Espn and ABC do.

I think Fox stuck with the coaches poll (or at least used to..if they changed it would have been recently), and I'm not sure but I maybe NBC/Comcast also used it?

Totally agree.

Wife is a Baylor grad. We make 2 TN home games, 2 Baylor home games, plus one road game for each every year.

This year's TN schedule is Austin Peay & Georgia at home, plus @ Oregon. Baylor games we are making in 2013 are OK & Texas at home, and @ TCU.

Been married 10 years & have done the same 2 home/ 1 road for each school schedule every year. Sadly I have seen many more Baylor wins than Vol wins over that time, including Baylor wins over TAMU, Texas, TCU, Washington, Oklahoma. Let that settle in.

Finally had to bring the Mrs. to Austin Peay this year for her to see a UT win at Neyland. She had been at 2 home games per year for 10 years & had never seen a win.

Granted, we go to the big games; AL, FL, USCe, LSU, ND, GA, Miami (FL), UCLA, OR, etc. Just goes to show what a lost decade it has been for Vols football.

Interestingly, her first Vols game ever was a win in the Swamp in 2002. But that has been cancelled by a lot of piss poor football: 2002 SEC CG, 2007 SEC CG, @ LSU "13 men on the field" final play, and too many home losses to Dawgs, Gators, Alabubba, USCe, etc.

We are heading for Autzen this weekend & hoping for the best. Go Vols.

Agreed. I don't buy Wisconsin losing at ASU this weekend. The Ohio State game will be really tough and the Illinois road game is actually looking fairly difficult as well (who knew?), but I think they can make it to DD wins. They were a pretty unlucky team last year and that stuff doesn't often carry over to the next season.

If we run it down their throat enough we'll be able to make foie gras to go with the soup. :)
