99 days from now begins the script of a season. As narrated by Morgan Freeman...
The end of August always marks a new beginning in Knoxville, Tennessee. Over 103,000 fans turn out each week to watch their beloved orange and white take on all challengers under second year head coach Butch Jones. Optimism - too much of it - is in the air.
The youth on both lines and inexperience on defense shows as the Vols eke out narrower than hoped wins over Utah State (by 4) and Ark State (by 13). The Oklahoma game is a repeat of last year's Oregon game, with fans predicting all sorts of outlandish victories and then facing reality. The OU game is close for a quarter and then Knight finds his groove with OU pulling away to win by 38. Several UT offensive players are nicked up by Sooner blitzes, but are eligible to play by the following week.
Like last year's Florida game, the Georgia game is a chance to rebound from the huge non-conference loss on the road, with GA this time playing the role of the underachieving rival. Like Florida of 2013, Georgia is just a little too much, Vols lose by 6. Some of the more irrational fans grumble about CBJ's ability at the SEC level because he can't live up to their unrealistic expectations.
The Florida matchup, then, becomes last year's SC game. With his back to the wall and the natives restless, CBJ has Worley and Dobbs rotate series, and UT upsets favored Florida at home by 5, winning back the hearts of the fans, but the UT running game is basically non existent in the win, and VN grumbles about how "all that talent" failed to score TDs 4 times from inside the 20, even though all that talent on the OL still have minimal experience with SEC level run schemes.
The next five games go just as the experts suggest, and the fan base rides the emotional roller coaster: win over UTC by 26, loss to Bama by 35, narrow loss at Ole Miss in OT, narrow loss to SC by 9, and win over an improved KY by 4 have the vols 5-5 and the fans complaining about players and schemes but confident of a bowl game. Talk show hosts play the role of referee between FAHR BUTCH and "give it time" contingents.
In the final home game, future SEC player of the year Maty Mauck comes in and engineers a TD drive early in the 4th quarter to beat UT by 4. Ferguson plays the entire second half after Dobbs is injured and Worley is ineffective. His final drive ends on a pick at the MU 25.
Needing a win to go bowling, UT finally shakes the Vandy monkey off their backs with a hard fought 21-14 victory. Worley and Ferguson split drives and each is relatively ineffective, but Hurd breaks the 1000 yd mark in the second quarter and scores all three TDs on the route to bowl eligibility.
In the Music City Bowl, UT beats Texas Tech by 10.
Following the bowl games, fans are bitterly divided on CBJs ability to coach. He is set to have a top 10 recruiting class, though, and is mostly forgiven by Jan 3, when the basketVols play their first home game as a top 25 team in four years. By national signing day, all is forgiven and forgotten as a #7 ranked football recruiting class comes in. Vol fans begin to predict a 2015 national championship.
I see us ending with a record of 5 - 7. We lose to Florida AGAIN. Can't get that monkey off of our back, even at home, even when we are clearly the better team.
Our main problem on this team will be on offense. We have the receivers but Worley, Dobbs, Peterman nor Ferguson can get the ball to them, even when they are wide open 40 yards down field.
The lack of big plays cost us 3 victories. bUTch will work on that issue during the off season though.
The 2015 recruiting class will be another whopper of a class. In 2015, we will be the most improved team in college football. 2014's record will be 5 -7 but the 2015 record will be 9 wins in the regular season, with losses to Florida, Alabama & Oklahoma.
We become eligible for a bowl game. The fans are starved to end the bowl drought and they travel well to Florida to our bowl game. We win that game and end the season in the top 25 with a record of 10 - 3.....
