SEC basketball coaches were seriously discussing a proposal increasing the field for the Big Dance this week. This article...
Birmingham News
makes it sound as if the idea might actually have some legs at last.
I'm all for this idea. With so much heated debate about bubble teams that don't get in, why not open up seven more at large bids?

I couldn't be more opposed to this idea. If you can't earn your way into a 64 team field, I have no interest in seeing you in the tournament. Let's just let everyone in the tournament.

I agree . . . If they're going to allow 72, how about 100? How about 128? There's no rhyme or reason to it other than an extra pay day.

So neither of you feels the talk of parity, and the year in year out sniping about the 3 to 5 teams who "absolutely deserved to be there" is enough to open the door just this little bit to more entrants?

The article made note of the increased number of teams since the last expansion...
Many SEC coaches say expanding is necessary because there is more parity in the sport. Division I has grown from 282 basketball teams in 1985 to 334 today....

To answer your question succinctly, no.

If any thing, allowing more teams into the tournament will hurt the mid-majors because the elite conference teams will schedule weaker opponents during the regular season making it harder for a mid major to compile quality wins.

Bingo . . . Plus it would effectively render the regular season meaningless.

I'm no expert on this, so what would one have to do with the other?
And with big school fans ponying up more and more money for seats, would they really "sit" still for more games against New Hampshire Presbyterian Methodist Wesleyan?

And did you feel the same in '85 when they went from 53 to 64...
Absolutely. The tournament should have never been expanded past 32 teams.

Not interested
that might just mean 8 more games where a high seed screws around and wins by a ton
there's plennnnnty of excitement with 64

What is this obsession the athletic directors and conference officials seem to have with screwing with perfection?

Unbelievable.

Isn't it strange they can talk about expanding a basketball tourney when really what they need to be figuring out is a playoff system for college football.Too old, too set in their old ways!

Sounds like one of thoes punk ass acc coaches pushing for this because they didn't get the their raise for making the tourney. In fact I'm almost sure of it.
