The passionate radical fan side of me wants to gnash my teeth and spew venom over these one sided losses. This side of me says:

1) Butch is the right guy but assistant coaches may need to get their walking papers eventually. Never shoulda let Pitmann or Chaney go. We could've used them. Jancek and Martinez are Georgia rejects, fired by Richt. Why would we want them here at Tennessee??!

2) Other asst. coaches, regardless of talent level, could have this group playing and competing better. Look at Vanderbilt. Do they have more talent and depth than we do? Their 3 star QB from Maryville just helped them whip FLA yesterday. Good for Patton Robinette! Good kid, deserves it.

3) Bad play calling, predictable, no rythm, risky plays that yield nothing at the wrong time, contribute to unsustainable drives.

4) An offensive line that is supposed to be all NFL draft picks can't seem to dominate much more than a high school defensive line.

5) This "read option", "hybrid spread offense" is a gimmick in the short run and removes us further from the Tennessee we have been in the past. We need to get a big time fullback and have tight ends running around everywhere playing straight up power football and using these "NFL" linemen like they ARE "NFL" linemen. Zone blocking is crap.

The objective, take a step back and look at the big picture side of me says:

1) CBJ inherited a train wreck of a program plagued by mismanagement, almost totally devoid of speed and talent, a losers mentality of which it take more than 3/4 of a season to change.

2) Is part of the problem the asst. coaches or just the talent level? We won't REALLY know that until CBJ has landed at least three top recruiting classes and the evidence becomes more conclusive. Is it really fair to call Jancek and Martinez UGA rejects? For coaches, as much as players, it a lot of times boils down to chemistry and how they all work together.

3) The total incompetence of prior administrations (Hammy, Dooley and Cheek the booger picker still hanging on like a bad hemorrhoid) was/is the cause of our Chernobyl style nuclear meltdown of all time at Tennessee.

4) Love him or hate him, we lost a QB (and yep, I knocked him pretty hard at times for his leadership) and a truck load of offensive weapons that coulda/shoulda won 9 games last year if we had a defense at all. We are playing freshmen all over the place and walkons on defense in some spots.

5) Auburn, Mizzou and most all other programs that had bad seasons last year certainly had more talent waiting in the wings and none, but none have seen the number of coaches run through here like a hot knife through butter like we have nor absolute incompetence at the admin level.

Like anything, the truth is somewhere in the middle. I'm not happy but not much has really surprised me this year. I had hoped for better. CBJ can recruit and is proving that. But this is a 1 million piece jigsaw puzzle that will simply take a while to put all the pieces together. I just hope these guys find renewed urgency and realize we are down to a 2 game season and not all is lost. There's still a bowl game to play for. Take a week off and recover mentally and physically and then strap it on for two more times this season and leave it all on the field. Still p.o.'d....but always a Vol fan.

I love Butch Jones, but I am worried that he will keep John Jancek, no matter what. The Jancek's & Jones are long time family friends. I heard Jancek say in an interview that their families vacation together every summer. It is hard to be objective when you have such a tight personal relationship with your assistant coaches.

Jancek has nothing to work with, but Mike B. offensive play calling is suspect. He's going to learn that you have to be able to power run when you don't have a true threat at QB in a read option. It may be that we line up in a two TE set on the outside in a single back formation to help complete these 3rd and 1 situations. Anything will be an advantage over this read option up the middle.

One thing to remember is that Fulmer's problems started when he could not see himself firing a good friend who happened to be one of assistant coaches.

CBJ said in his post game conference that he had to take the emotion out of it.

I doubt it but he's an 18 year old freshmen who just started 2.5 games ago. I'd say he's doing pretty darn well given the circumstances.

I like Dobbs' ability to throw while on the move. It almost seems that he is more accurate with his passes when he is having to move around.

Pretty much agree with you on all that. The sweeps with Pig and passes to the flat are getting old. The defense doesn't get fooled too much when we run those plays with Pig. I know we want playmakers to get the ball but it seems they are lacking creativity. Why not just run wildcat with Pig some? I don't anticipate staff changes this year. I am going to reserve judgment on staff for a season or 2 but I share OP's concerns about Jancek. However, maybe Jancek and Martinez's sons will come in handy a couple years down the road.

Good post OP. I agree with most of your points and I would guess that the majority of the fan base does as well.

I disagree - I believe it "boils down to" results!

I agree, just not sold that he's the guaranteed starter the next 3.5 years

This goes though my head every Saturday... The good news is, if Butch isn't the answer then maybe he can recruit well enough (or at least better than the last two) to have a full stock of talent for the next guy. That being said, I like Butch and hope he wins big here.

None of us are privy to the coaches' assessment of our current players so we do not know what their comfort level is calling certain plays. With the change from Worley to Dobbs and some receivers who have been in and out, continuity is non-existent lately. The O-line is my biggest disappointment. I think they have been exposed for their lack of grit and ability this entire season. Yesterday was their best SEC showing but Auburn's defense will get pounded by Bama. I hope not but I am afraid it is true. Missouri is the best chance to see Bama lose, imo.

GO VOLS!!!!!

CBJ may be the right guy, but he needs to get a new DC!!

I agree with you and I don't think there are many here thinking he is the starter from here on out, but he is what we had to work with considering the injuries and he at least ads some running ability which no one can deny helped us get some first downs Saturday. Yes, he has a lot of growing to do, but things could be much worse. Talk about not sold on someone--- Peterman.

Jancek and Martinez were scapegoats to keep Helen Hunt from getting fired himself!

I've wondered. Have heard more than one GA fan tell me that Martinez should have been position coach and Jancek the DC at UGA. Which is why I ask the question, is it fair to point the finger at these guys so soon just b/c of their history at UGA or are we going to see a vastly improved D with two more recruiting classes?

Helen Hunt?! :birgits_giggle:
