Lady Vols in position for a big finish and there are a lot of signs of improvement. Turnovers are down and shot selection and basketball IQ is up. All the improvement seems to point to Carter at point guard she just seems to get it and keeps the team playing under control. Since she took over team has six double digit wins. Reynolds has filled in nicely as a point sub. Meghan Simmons has played under control and her shot selection and basketball IQ has been higher since Carter became the point guard than anytime in her career at Tennessee. Going forward still need a few things to happen for us to reach our potential and get to the final four.

1-Harrison needs to get her fouling under control. She is a key player that spends to much time on the bench because of foul trouble. She should be playing over thirty minutes a game but foul trouble keeps her on the bench Tennessee is certainly not as talented when she is not on the floor.
2-Graves needs to up her game. She has been the victim of some very bad calls none worse than when she was called for the charge when she made a layup against Vandy. She gets down on herself and that is affecting her play. You have to play through bad calls. I would like her to get more passes at the high post and either drive the ball or take the fifteen foot shot. She was great doing that in high school.
3-Team needs to concentrate more on free throws a lot of misses in the last few games. It is all about concentration it is a fifteen foot shot with no one guarding you no reason not to make 75 percent.
4- Need a more aggressive Mercedes Russell. She is still playing way to timid. Much better than the start of the season, but still not forceful enough in her play. She is the biggest player on the floor no reason for her not to dominate.
5-Keep Meghan under control she is scoring more now on less shot attempts because she is taking advantage of her speed and getting to the basket and getting great looks from the three and closer in. Her assists are way up as she is now looking for players with better shots. She needs to stay under control she is fun to watch when she plays in the team concept.

Huge games coming up that will determine the SEC Champion. Three teams seem to be in contention. Tennessee, South Carolina, and Texas A&M. Texas A&M seems to have the easiest schedule however both Tennessee and South Carolina hold the tie breaker over them. Games of concern for Tennessee on the road at Missouri lost there last season. On the road at LSU lost at home this season. Wins in both of those games will be huge. It would be great if the title came down to the last game at home between Tennessee and South Carolina should be a great game.
Next up Kentucky who has been running hot and cold. We need to keep them from driving to the basket make them take jump shots. All home games are must wins should be a great game this Sunday.

As good as Carter has been playing the point, I'm almost scared about arguably our best player (at the time she went out) coming back. I'd also like to see Carter stay at the point and move Ariel to the #2 spot and look to get more shots rather than worry about running the offense. But the worry is if Holly will even do that. And, even if she does, Ariel has to get that team chemistry back, which will likely take at least a game and maybe more. There's not a ton of regular season games left and only possibly two of them are against foes where we could stand them to have some chemistry growing pains.

As far as the regular season title goes, I could be wrong, but as my memory serves, I don't think there are technically any tie breakers. I think you'd be co-champions even if it's a team you beat head to head. But, deep down the team that won the head to head would know they are the champs ;)

- Kentucky has been a disaster offensively against the zone.
- Our bigs should dominate down low.
- Now that they aren't allow to mug the offensive players the press shouldn't be that big of a deal. Its odd how it appears the 10 second rule (which you'd think would help them) has hurt them as it seems teams aren't as timid in the back court. They realize they've only got 10 seconds to get it over so they attack. Time after time I've seen UK give up points real close in the paint because the opponent broke through the press and UK had nothing on the back side to prevent the drive to the basket.

I would read that but the season would end about two weeks before I finished.

Carter's increased playing time seems to have helped the team. She doesn't score as much as Massengale but is a better defender and a steady player who runs the team well and doesn't commit turnovers--a big deal. I think Warlick & Co. will have to make some big decisions about the rotation when Massengale returns. She can play Massengale, Carter and Simmons--but then we've got a small, not-very-physical lineup.

The coaches need to drill this team more on passing into the low post. They are not very good at recognizing when a post player needs the ball and then getting it to her. We are pretty good (but not great) at getting it to Harrison--but nobody will pass the ball to Russell. She comes in the game, works pretty hard on the offensive end to establish position--but nobody passes her the ball in the paint! Jones is particularly bad--she will look and wait and not pass it. Russell will help this team--she understands the game--but one would never know from watching her that she was the nation's top prospect last year. But why don't we start by actually passing her the ball in the paint!

Graves has got to stop being moody on the court--and she's got to develop an offensive game. I'd like to think our coaches would help her with that--but UT is not very good at developing offensive talent. She and Jones are good defenders--we need them on defense--but they turn around and hurt us on offense. In my most optimistic mood I think that Jones is an offensive diamond in the rough. Right now, she is more tin than diamond, which is why Warlick and the other coaches should be working her RELENTLESSLY before, during and after practice on offensive moves, shooting and dribbling. I see her has having the potential to REALLY help this team on both ends--but she simply has to find some semblance of an offensive game, develop some confidence and stop playing like a befuddled, indecisive high-schooler when UT has the ball.

If you were to be asked to put in order the six 3-pt shooters by percentage?

Carter is second - over 40% and Jones is 40%. Massengale 3rd Simmons 4th

Many years ago PHS made a decision to change point guards in mid-career and installed Splenderela and a championship resulted.

I can only speculate why an injured player does not appear on the bench and assume something relative to the eye. Detached retina or anything that would cause the doctors to not have the person become excited or move rapidly. If she is not yet practicing and from what we surmise not even in the gym stretching, riding the stationery bike etc. so she will be out of shape when she is allowed back. I'm wondering if she will play again before NCAA tourney time.

good posts armchair,i am with you on how well the team is playing with Carter at the point and what to do when Massengale comes back

I have seen Russell not looking for a pass a lot of times, but she isn't the only one either, that might be part of the reluctance to pass to her

I don't understand what is going on with Jones either, like you said, she looks decent at times on offense and then goes back to poor passing and shooting

Graves is a mystery this year,i have no idea what is going on with her,we all know that she can play better than what she is showing for the most part this year
