Ok here in my house we have been having some really good fights :banghead: on the meaning of a true fan...............So what does a true fan mean.............is it some one who supported the school in every sport.........or is it some one who like one team in football and another team in basketball....................So I figured I would send this out to all of the VOLS FANS just to see what you think...........any input would be helpful........So let me know what you think a true fan is............. :twocents:

Fan is short for the word fanatic. A true sports fan is one that is fanatic about his or her team or teams. For instance, once the bowl games start, I happen to be an SEC fan. Doesn't make me any more or less of a UT fan though.

true fan? i don't know....i've been a TN fan all my life, so i don't know any other way to be....i went to school there, but that wasn't what made me a fan....i grew up on it. So, i'm not going to say that you have to go to that school or grow up as a particular team's fan etc....but you do have to have a "we" mentality. when i talk about the Vols to my buddies, it's always "we" this, "we" that...never an they or them. Now when i talk about the Panthers or STeelers, it's more of they and them. Because while i do really like both teams, it just doesn't sting as bad or feel as good when they win or lose, as it does for the Vols. as for all sports UT, i root for them, and had a blast with the bball team this year, but football rules for me...that's what i live and die with....if the baseball team or track and feild team lose something, i'm not losing any sleep. I would trade most any other sport championship for a football championship every time...the only one that might rival it would be men's bball....don't know that i would give that up....that would be cool too.....

True fan? as long as you love your team thru thick and thin, always.

If you are a"true" fan you don't need anyone's definition, you know who you are. To me you don't have to live and breathe every sport that a school has , (UT has a golf team and I hope they are successful but when it comes down to it they could finish dead last and it would not affect my day.) but you should support them all. I agree with Jake when it comes to UT they are "my" team when it comes to discussions with friends, "My boys are gonna run right over you Bammers this weekend." or "We should be ok in the secondary this year." Can you be a "true" fan of 2 different teams? I guess you could if it were 2 different sports but I personally can't. I too like Lex am a SEC fan of all except Bama (if Bama were playing the Russian national team in hockey I might be able to squeeze out a "roll tide" (GAG REFLEX!) )and that makes me no less of a "true" UT fan.

You just know if you are or not...

And few things in sports make me more sick than when any fan second-guesses any other's allegiance, especially over petty issues.

Also, pessimistic fans DO exsist. Don't, anyone, be close-minded enough to think that only eternal optimists are good fans of their teams. It's not limited to anybody.

i think it's funny when people like miami in football and north carolina in basketball.

did you just randomly pick a team and cheer for them or did you pick two teams who are usually successful and cheer for them. I dont see people like that as fans. They just want to feel like they're a fan but doesnt know what it really means.

Why not be a Vandy fan in football and a Baylor fan in basketball? Seems odd.

Tons of Tennessee football fans on this very site were exactly like that before this basketball seasons. Tennessee in the fall and North Carolina in winter and spring.

I believe you definitely can be a true fan of 2 teams in the same sport, however, when they play each other you pretty much become a spectator, hoping for a great game with an exciting finish.

My parents both went to UT, along with my Dad's 9 siblings and their spouses, and my Mom's brother. I grew up on UT football. However, I am Irish Catholic, grew up in Kansas City (a more than Irish city,) went to Catholic schools, and was indoctrinated into the Notre Dame lore since conception. I did my undergrad at UT and make sure that I am in the stadium (whichever it may be) when UT and ND face off. I usually find myself pulling for the team that is losing at the time and towards the end of the game cheering for the team that needs the win more.

I'm with Crakaveli on this.

And like milo said, it exists for UT "fans" as well.

The only college sports I follow closely are football and men's basketball, but I still wish the other teams well. I'm just not gonna be there waiting anxiously for the results of the track or swim meet.

and that makes you no less of a "true" fan if you are able to separate the loyaties then great! Like I said before A "true" fan needs no definition.
I just wouldn't know what to do when they played each other, but to each his own. I guess you could do like the Moms who have children at different schools and wear one of those half jerseys.

When the games are at UT I go in green and sit with UT fans, when they are in South Bend I wear orange and sit with ND fans.

A true fan is ...

1. Always optimistic about finding a way to win.
2. Honest and consistent in criticism of the team, a player, or a coach.
3. Roots, but knows he/she has no control over the outcome.
4. Accepts that you can't win 'em all, but insists it is theoretically possible and that if anyone is ever going to do it, it will be their school.
5. Loyal, but not blindly so.

A true fan feels like crap the entire weekend on into the week if his or her team loses! :biggrin2: I pull for the Vols in everything.I keep up with football, mens & womens basketball.I really don't think you can be a cross over fan.

I went to a funeral in Anniston, Alabama last year on the day of the Tennessee/Alabama football game. I didn't wear Orange, but everyone knows that my my father-in-law and I are huge UT fans. The whole place was full of people wearing Crimson. Crimson Sports Coats, Crimson trousers..You name it. The roses on the casket were shaped into an "A" with white and crimson roses. A few of us kept sneaking into a room with a TV to watch the game. After the funeral and burial, we all raced back to a relative's home where there was food and drinks. We resumed listening to the game at the house of the young man they just buried.

Sad, sad day.

I also got engaged to my wife at Rainbow falls on Oct 25, 2003, right before the 5 OT game against Bama.

That would all be right up there at the top of the list.

How about getting married and racing to the hotel after the reception and watching all 4 quarters of a blowout on your wedding night?

A true fan is one who follows their favorite team and supports them whether they win or lose and is proud to walk around sporting their attire even in the biggest of defeats and losing seasons, I pretty much wear a tn shirt every day under my scrubs at work. I cant stand bandwagon fans to me they should be barred from watching sports. I think you can have different favorite teams as long as they are in different sports. I would have to say that I am a die hard TN football fan, and I love college football.

A true fan, well, as far as I know I've been a UT fan since I remember watching Vol football back in the early 60's. I was born in "BIG ORANGE COUNTRY" (Carter County). Even the high school I went to was "BIG ORANGE" (Elizabethton Cyclones-team colors: orange & black). Only one other team have I been a true fan of since 1957 and that is the Braves. That's back when Burdette, Spahn, Buhl, Adcock, Mathews, Aaron, Crandall, Bruton and Torre(Frank) played. I live and die when the Vols lose in football and basketball. I remember the days of the "Ernie/Bernie" show and the days when the Vols, Vandy and Kentucky were front runners in the SEC in basketball (men's).
I have at least 4-5 Vol caps, at least half a dozen T-shirts, some banners, flags and other Vol items to put on my car. I even have "LOV VOLS" as my tag on my car. Does that not count for something? A die hard Vol fan all the way! Same goes for the Braves.
GO VOLS!!!!!!!!! GO BRAVES!!!!
