Many years ago, I was made the Financial Director of a company that was over 300 miles away. Unfortunately, this company had been failing for a while and I found out that each time I visited them I had to make about a dozen people redundant. I hated that job, but the only way I could do it was to think of myself as a surgeon, whilst not responsible for the patients situation, I had the horrible job of amputating limbs to try to ultimately save the patient. Well by a quirk of scheduling fate in 2024, Josh Heupel and his merry men meet up with a number of teams with Head Coaches already on the proverbial “Hot Seat” and Coach Heupel’s visit might just might have the same outcome as mine did to those poor companies employees all those years ago.

Week 4 at Oklahoma – Brett Venables
Are Oklahoma going to suffer “big fish small pond to small fish big pond syndrome” by moving from the Big 2 (sorry Big 12) to the SEC? For years Oklahoma have been ranked in the preseason either 1st or 2nd in the Big 12 pending how good TEX are, but this season their schedule includes TEX, OLE MISS, ALA, MISS, LSU and TENN who are all ranked above them. So if the season goes to form OKA will not even have a winning season and just about get a minor Bowl Game. There is another problem for Venables, it is one where the ex-girlfriend that you dumped a few years ago has surprisingly found both happiness and success in life without you whilst you seem to be going in the opposite direction. Week 4 could be very painful for Sooners fans as realization sets in.

Week 5 at Arkansas – Sam Pittman
Having surprised the footballing world in the beginning at Arkansas, things have turned sour for Sam Pittman at Fayetteville, to highlight this they are now predicted to be 14th in the SEC this season. Then look at the roster and tell me which players we should approach though NIL……….I bet your list is as short as mine. So, if Nico lights it up in Week 5 in their own back yard, things could get ugly for Sam.

Week 6 Florida – Billy Napier
One of the bizarre things in College Football is how each season Tennessee finish far higher that Florida yet also lost to them, and that loss probably kept Napier in his job. Well one day the dam will burst and when it does (and it will) Tennessee could extract revenge on an epic scale by running up the score and if that happens in Knoxville this season it will probably be curtains for this over promoted Head Coach.

Week 7 Alabama – Kalen DeBoer
OK losing to the Vols is not going to cost DeBoer his job this season but this guy has the worst job in College Football history by following Nick Saban. The standard and thus expectation is so high that not winning a Natty is regarded as failure in the eyes of Alabamans and three defeats in a season is simply unthinkable. Now look at their schedule in year 1 for DeBoer, GEO, TENN, MISS, LSU, OKA, AUB that there is six potential losses and that doesn’t include an improved WIS. So for most people 9-3 would be pretty good with that schedule, but try selling that to Bama world drunk on world domination.

Week 9 Mississippi State – Jeff Lebby
Now I know very little about new Head Coach Lebby, but this team still seems in morning from the tragic loss of “The Pirate”. His system papered over the cracks or more accurately, holes in the roster and losing quarterback KJ Jefferson is not going to help. To put it in perspective, they are ranked in the pre-season polls below Arkansas, so good luck Jeff.

Week 12 at Vanderbilt – Clark Lea
Hope is back as another new coach arrives at Vanderbilt, Hope slowly withers away as reality sets in, Coach then gets sacked, Hope is back as new coach arrives in Vanderbilt………So the only question at this point is where is Clark Lea on this carousel? And will it be another beating by their instate master’s that will trigger the removal of Lea.

I think Josh Heupel is not only a brilliant Coach but also a decent human being so this season could be a bittersweet one for him as his successes will mean the opposite for others in his chosen profession.

Once again, LV, you combine analysis & expertise from across the pond, adding a helping portion of optimism. I'd be most happy with your predictions. The SEC is going to be quite a gauntlet for any member team to run this season. SO good to have you back in the conversation. Hope you're feeling better.

Just reverse the cirmcumstances and Josh was on the hot seat. I don't think any coach at those above places would care about Josh. It is the nature of the beast with the SEC- a dog eat dog world. Venables, DeBoer, and Lebby are going to find this out. These guys make good money to be a coach and will be ok if they get fired. Failure money. I hope the Vols can execute some pain on these guys as it has been a long 15 years for most Vol fans regarding football. The worm is turning- regarding Vol football.

Oh, for sure. There's plenty of money sloshing around in all these coaches' buckets that they're not worrying about each other. Josh likes some of his counterparts, I'm sure, might be good friends with one or two of them, but he dislikes some of them, too.

More than any of that, he loves football. Loves competing. Loves figuring out ways to win, and win big. He's addicted to the sport. I guess many of the head coaches are. But some more than others, and Josh is up at that bleeding edge.

Wouldn't trade him for anyone not named Neyland. Given the evolution of the sport since the General's day, I probably wouldn't even trade then.

Josh is one hell of a coach. A lot of us here recognize that already. Most of the world is gonna catch up, starting next month. Remember how folks were talking about him after 2022? This is gonna be even more. Even more.

And it's gonna last for decades.

We're gonna get spoiled. Gotta figure out how not to become entitled like the Gumps were.

Go Vols!

Have a friend who is an exFB player at Arkansas and a booster. He says Pittman is just there for this season to transition Petrino, who is new OC, into the team and he will be gone and Patrino will take over. I questioned the decision to bring Petrino back and he said he was not on board with that but the Ark Admin decided.

Josh has taken recruiting to another level with the talent he has brought in, and expect it to take another upward turn when it becomes obvious to the top recruits that he can develop them to their absolute best. I look for Tennessee to be equal to Georgia recruiting level within a couple of years.

the coaches we have are very solid. They recruit well, "coach" the players up and overall have a good scheme.
When was the last time we were in position to have this many good 4*+ OL and DL in the last few and upcoming classes of recruits?

Nice write up as always! Didn't KJ Jefferson play for Arkansas? Did he transfer to MSU in the spring and leave again?

Keep trying to make something out of nothing because some of you are acting like a jealous husband when their wife's EX husband comes back around nice to meet the most paranoid fan base in the SEC.

The only issue is between Bob Stoops and Josh no one else.

Someone triggered this Oklahoma fan. I guess he's mad that the QB who won them a Natty is about to come in as head coach and smoke them.

The game against Arkansas in Fayetteville could be a trap game because Tennessee has never historically played that well at Arkansas in any major SEC sport.........

That being said, it will be a chess match between Heupel and Petrino on the offensive side of the ball.

I only have issue with one of our coaches - w martinez. He is on the backside of his career and really think Josh could make an upgrade there. We culled the slaw from last year so no excuses now regarding production back there. Play the best players if doing what is best for the defense and team.
