ORANGE AND WHITE GAME : REVIEW

As a Vol fan this is the time of year that to feed me, I look for “any crumbs” that might fall from the Captain’s Table. So here are 5 “crumbs” that I got from the Spring Game last night. I realise it was not much more than a glorified scrimmage (I addressed my opinion at aviewfrombigben.com a couple of weeks ago), but here are my observations.

No 5. OMARR NORMAN-LOTT

Omarr Norman-Lott is one of the transfers from the Portal and he has received very little publicity since his arrival in Knoxville, presumably because as a Defensive Tackle the fans feel this was not a position of need, unlike others. However, you can never have too many bodies in the trench department, especially in a Defense built by Rodney Garner as he loves to rotate, keeping the ‘big uglies’ fresh. Well, last night Omarr introduced himself to Volnation with 4 tackles, 1 ½ sacks and 2 TFLs. Welcome, big man.

No 4. 3rd QUARTERBACK

We are all aware of Joe Milton and Nico Iamaleava as the primary Quarterbacks but I am sure there was still a nagging doubt in the fans’ minds, that it was risky to have only two quarterbacks on the Roster and therefore a visit to the Transfer Portal was probably on the cards after Spring Training. It would be unlikely that any ‘blue chip’ player would sign for Tennessee as they would not see a viable route to playing time, because of the aforementioned two. No need to do this now as Gaston Moore (8-11 94 yards and 1 TD) showed that if we were reduced to using a 3rd Quarterback this season, he is more than serviceable. Moore may not have the ‘rocket arm’ of both Milton and Iamaleava but he showed he was accurate and comfortable in the system.

No 3. ETHAN DAVIS

Tennessee have struggled to incorporate the Tight Ends into the passing game over the last few years, Dominick Wood-Anderson and Princeton Fant both had moments but neither “broke out. However, Ethan Davis, the 4-star Freshman, just might be that guy to do so. 3 Rec for 53 yards is not earth shattering but it was his mobility that was what was so impressive, for me particularly it was the 30-yard grab from Iamaleava. I’m sure many were concerned to see him fall heavily late on, but early reports are that it is a broken collarbone and the 4 to 6 week rehab timeline will give him plenty of time to heal before Fall Camp.

.
No 2. NICO IAMALEAVA

I am sure all eyes last night were on the much-heralded debut of Nico Iamaleava and he didn’t disappoint. 8-16 112 yards and 1 TD are presentable stats but the real eye opener was the pass in the last series of the 1st half when he rolled out to the right and tossed a beautiful 30 yard pass in a tight window to Ethan Davis. This play shows, that whilst he is not the finished article and will be sitting behind Milton to start his career, the hype is for real and the short-term future of the Vols is in good hands.

No 1. CAMERON SELDON

For me Cameron Seldon was the best news last night. He ran well with 10 rushes for 45-yards but he also snared 3 catches for 43 yards. Now there are two bits of good news there i) Whilst Tennessee have a deep stable of running backs, there are a bit “samey” in size, skill and style. Seldon is a much bigger back but also displayed a good burst of speed when he ran for that TD run. ii) He was recruited as a Wide Receiver, so he obviously understands route running and has good hands catching which will make him a dangerous weapon when releasing himself from the line of scrimmage. Both these skills will give the Offensive Game planning a multitude of opportunities and as we already know Josh Heupel, unlike his predecessors, doesn’t not waste such opportunities.

I look forward to your comments

Now it's 7 on 7 and individual strength and conditioning until fall camp. This is the period where the team leaders step up and get buy in for hard work and accountability. Last years team was impressive on how they kept focused with no coaches around. Heupel instilled some good off season habits and it paid dividends and it'll be great to see that again.

Counting down to kickoff already. Thanks LondonVol!

Seldon should give Heup another option since he can line up in the slot or RB.

I think the 3rd QB option point is spot on. He KNOWS the system backwards and forwards...I cant help but think back to 1985 when Tony Robinson was injured and out for the season and Dickey did an admirable job in his stead. Nothing fancy....just kept the vehicle on the right side of the highway (well...for you London Vol that'd be the left side:)). And we finished strong. Granted...CJH's offense works best with a highly athletic QB but Josh would not have brought Moore in if he didn't think he would be an asset.

Great point tenrich1 about coach Heupel evaluating Moore before signing him😊 although I must correct you on one point, we don’t drive on the left side of the road but the wrong side of the road 😊😊

Thanks LV. I've yet to watch the OW Game, but after reading your analysis, I feel enlightened. Didn't expect much "continuity" with the OL starters & other proven players not playing, but encouraged by the youngsters & new talent. Gaston Moore likely will be Milton's backup at QB due to his familiarity with the CJH offense. Good insurance policy, though it's clear Nico is the future.

Moore was on the team last year. He also ran the scout team at UCF under Coach Hype. No evaluating needed

Gaston Moore scored 2 TDs, I'm not sure Nico had any as Cameron Seldon ran for a TD when he was QB. Milton had the other TD.

#4 I nice position to be in, for once in a lifetime.

#3 I sure hope you are right.

#2 I don't think there is a controversy. We have a number 1, but if he falters, we are in good hands.

#1 Could this type of player take UT's offense to another level? I sure hope so!

Great writeup as usual!
