An excerpt:

There's a distance between the two men that belies their shared experience in North Vietnam — call it an honor gap. Like many American POWs, McCain broke down under torture and offered a "confession" to his North Vietnamese captors. Dramesi, in contrast, attempted two daring escapes. For the second he was brutalized for a month with daily torture sessions that nearly killed him. His partner in the escape, Lt. Col. Ed Atterberry, didn't survive the mistreatment. But Dramesi never said a disloyal word, and for his heroism was awarded two Air Force Crosses, one of the service's highest distinctions. McCain would later hail him as "one of the toughest guys I've ever met."
On the grounds between the two brick colleges, the chitchat between the scion of four-star admirals and the son of a prizefighter turns to their academic travels; both colleges sponsor a trip abroad for young officers to network with military and political leaders in a distant corner of the globe.

"I'm going to the Middle East," Dramesi says. "Turkey, Kuwait, Lebanon, Iran."
"Why are you going to the Middle East?" McCain asks, dismissively.

"It's a place we're probably going to have some problems," Dramesi says.

"Why? Where are you going to, John?"

"Oh, I'm going to Rio."

"What the hell are you going to Rio for?"

McCain, a married father of three, shrugs.

"I got a better chance of getting laid."

Dramesi, who went on to serve as chief war planner for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and commander of a wing of the Strategic Air Command, was not surprised. "McCain says his life changed while he was in Vietnam, and he is now a different man," Dramesi says today. "But he's still the undisciplined, spoiled brat that he was when he went in."

the little pulled strings to get in tidbit and failure to recognize McCain's joke about Rio should tell you plenty about the author and help you in being very dubious about the contents of the article.

Again, I wouldn't expect any other line of defense from you BPV. I didn't say you had to believe it, but I don't think it's that far fetched.

OWB, did you see the article from Buchanan County about Obama? It made the LA Times.

Also, I do not have a link but rumor has it that Obama thinks healthcare is a right. Yikes! I doubt we can find a credible source for such an outrageously nonsensical comment like that.

That's strange. According to James Stockdale, Fmr. Senator Jeremiah Denton, William P. Lawrence, and other high ranking POWS. The Vietnamese broke all the POWs to a certain extent. Denton said in his book, McCain was in worse shape than any POW he had ever seen when he arrived at the Hanoi Hilton. He wasn't given medical attention for quite a while either.

As for the decorations your hero Dramesi received. Here are the decorations received by Admiral Stockdale.
Medal of Honor
Navy Distinguished Service Medal (3)
Silver Star (4)
Legion of Merit
Distinguished Flying Cross (2)
Bronze Star (2)
Air Medal
Purple Heart (2)
Prisoner of War Medal

what makes you think it isn't that far fetched?
and what is 'that' far fetched. Does that mean it's only mildly falsified.

Come on. Trash journalism is trash journalism regardless of topic or source. This is akin to the swift boat trash, but worse because this is about a POW situation.

Why would anyone listen to democrat complaints about Swiftboating after this?

Beautiful. First class reporting.

McCain chased a lot of tail. He hit the dog track. Developed a taste for poker and dice. He picked up models when he could, screwed a stripper when he couldn't.

In the air, the hard-partying McCain had a knack for stalling out his planes in midflight.

Is this a biography or Quentin Tarantino flick?

The most classic statement of all.

"John allows the media to make him out to be the hero POW, which he knows is absolutely not true, to further his political goals," says Butler. "John was just one of about 600 guys. He was nothing unusual. He was just another POW."

How very ordinary and self serving of him to be one of 600 POWs that suffered. That bastard!

McCain was offered early release by the Vietnamese. His father was a high ranking admiral. The Vietnamese thought is would be a great propaganda ploy.

McCain flatly refused the release, unless POWs held longer than himself were released first.
