The comments on the CNN version of this are hilarious. So many people swearing they will never watch ABC again.

They should barely miss a beat. Netflix is moving into original content; Google recently announced that they're going to spend $100m on original content for YouTube. It shouldn't be any problem at all to find a New Media production company to pick these soaps up for online distribution of some kind. The audience is still there, right?

Wait, the average age of the audience is 57? Never mind. Sorry Grandma.

Just to put this into perspective for you young uns, there was once a time when we didnt have cable tv, VCRs, or DVRs. You got 3 maybe 4 channels (not counting PBS because it was horrible at that time) so you watched what was on. There wasnt a weekday that went by you couldnt walk thru the dorms and see somebody watching a soap. Hell, it was fun tv. New show every single day and never a rerun. Plots changed, characters changed nothing stayed the same. It was a good way to waste some mindless time between classes.

They're dropping like flies. I can't say I'm shocked, younger generations haven't embraced them at all.

There is now a nationwide outbreak of panties-in-wads.

Now if they would just cancel Days of Our Lives I might have room for some of my shows on the DVR.
