ABC: Ministry of Propaganda?

This is a serious departure from ethics in journalism. ABC is allowing themselves to be used as a propaganda machine pure and simple. The fact that they are going to bill this as a town hall special is even further troubling since they will be excluding any opposing viewpoints or dialogue.

NBC and CBS are going to be pissed that they didn't get this deal. Oh well. Keep that change coming.

What's the problem? How does this depart from Network TV over the past 30 years?

The notion that the Republican party will not be heard on this, as though the townhall is going to result in passage of a bill the very next day, is ridiculous.

And that in no way changes the fact that this town hall meeting is a sham and ABC will not give any opposition a similar platform. This is pathetic and both ABC and Obama should be ashamed of themselves. Obama has already gone on record calling those who voice their opposition further government expansion into health care as fear mongers.

It's not about them not being heard on this. There are laws and regulations on the books about political usage on networks. Your side has incessantly whined about the Fairness Doctrine and equal time on the issues but yet sees no problem with this. Again, the hypocrisy is stifling.

The notion that it makes sense is more ridiculous. The guy is going to do an ad for socialized medicine. The crowds in Chicago that heard the precursor actually booed him. He has to do this to garner public support for an awful idea because congress members will be eviscerated back home for supporting the man. ABC playing along is absolute trash.

You're making it sound as if rebuttal via the news services will be as broadly viewed as his infomercial, which is patently absurd.

Then their complaint should be with the procedure of it, not that they fear the consequence is that their point of view will not be heard. I am perfectly fine with them calling out ABC for having the townhall to begin with. What irks me is their suggestion that this will actually make any difference in the outcome of the legislative process on this issue. That is simply not going to happen.

I am on record as opposing the Fairness Doctrine. I think its silly to believe that the government can moderate equal time or coverage. For some of the same reasons, as to this matter, me thinks the Republicans doth protest too much in that they are yet again manufacturing (or at least greatly exaggerating) a claim of media bias. Its just falling on deaf ears, I think.

My suspicion is that FOX will be happy to give the Republicans all sorts of time to counter the ABC special. And that a good 30 percent of that time will be the FOX anchor rolling his eyes at ABC.

I would imagine they will be viewed by different audiences. Those who support big reform wil watch ABC. Those who oppose reform or Obama or ABC will watch FOX. Everyone else will be bored in about 6 seconds and turn to ESPN.

Exaggerating a claim of media bias? Wow. You are really drinking the kool aid aren't you? Do you see this being done during Bush's 8 years in office? One network giving prime time coverage for one single side of an issue? ABC is giving high dollar time to the White House for one single side of a topic and agenda he is trying to force on the country. ABC is denying dialogue on the issue. They are not offering a debate or presenting all sides of the issue. They are not offering the insurance companies or doctors a voice at the table. They are giving one specific viewpoint solely on behalf of the sitting president of an issue that affects every American. If you don't think this deserves scrutiny or criticism, you've completely become blinded.

I doubt Fox would have done this on their own. If anything, Fox has proven they are more concerned about their profits generated than they are spreading propaganda. Wasn't a few weeks back they refused the Great One air time for his press conference reading from the teleprompter?

I didnlt say one could not criticize the townhall coverage. In fact I said it could. What I did say was that the notion that the townhall will have any effect on passage of legislation, or the claim that it will actually result in the GOP not being heard on the debate of the issue, is just monstrously exaggerated.

Who would know about monstrous exaggeration more than you?

Funny, but seriously, do you think an ABC town hall is going to result in some sort of tidal wave of support to dismantle the current insurance system for health care? No frickin way. The system will not change until we reach a tipping point on the economics of it, and even then it will probably take decades to overcome the institutionalized interests still making a living off of the current system.

Well in this case they will not be heard on the issue, Obama is going to be out in front on health care, he will continue to tell the people what "fear tactics" his opponents of his reform will use, ironic considering he is using the very tactics he criticizes others of using. Bottom line is this does give him a leg up on the debate of the issue. To claim otherwise is disingenuous.

ABC doing this adds the illusion of objectivity and credibility. It is an unfettered option for one-side to present it's case to the public.

To say it would affect the legislation is pollyannish.
