as I have said before my knowledge of hoops strategy is limited to church league and intermurals. But what would you have done?

Ole Miss is behind USC by 11 with 10 minutes to go and their best player picks up his 4th foul. The girl friend beater immediately takes him out of the game. IMHO at that point of the game down by 11 I would have left him in since there was little chance Ole Miss would have made up the deficit without him. So I would have rolled the dice hoping he could avoid a 5th foul. Opinions?

Whether you let him play or sit him down isn't anything set in stone, but is a call a coach will make based on a number of factors - how disciplined the player is in understanding how to play with four fouls, is he fatigued and possibly needs a blow anyway, do you have enough faith that your team can 'hold serve' until the player returns???

It is very much a gut call by the coach, but he can also monitor it minute by minute, and if he feels the game is getting away then get the kid back in the game. If you leave him in and he picks up his 5th on the next possession, it's game-set-match. To answer your question, there's really no set way to deal with that situation, but the idea is to lengthen your chances as much as possible.

Almost every coach is going to take that kid out with 10 minutes left in the game. They would probably let him sit until the 8 minute TV timeout at the very least. If the lead has been cut to single digits and stays there then some coaches wouldn’t bring him back in until the last TV timeout and live with whatever happens in the last 4 minutes. I think I would say a good general rule would be 1 possession/min left, meaning let’s say there are 5 minutes left with a 15 point deficit then you would be assured of at least 5 possessions within those 5 minutes because the opposing team will be running the 30 second play clock down during their possessions. A coach would more than likely bring him back in that particular situation to give his team a chance to win. There is no 100% correct answer but I feel like that’s how coaches typically look at it.
