If you under perform with an academic scholarship you are placed on probation and can lose your free education . If you under perform or don't give 100% effort with an athletic scholarship you face no consequences. Why is that?

Um…unless I'm mistaken, athletic scholarships can be revoked at the end of any year.

Often this fact is masked by the appearance that a player "chose to transfer" to another school, when in fact, they were sent packin'.

The Athletic Department would look pretty bad if they didn't renew a scholarship for a player that was in academic good standing but not measuring up on the field.

Remember people being excited about UT having a perfect APR score, and how proud the fans are that the team takes academics seriously? Well, non-renewal of schollies would negate all of that.

Athletic scholarships are a series of 1 year contracts. Schools are not obligated to renew them, but would have a heck of a hard time recruiting with a reputation for not doing so.

Don't you think it's funny how when the APR story came out that so many people were proud of the team and that Jones said it was UT's best victory of the year?

The reality is most people think like the OP and want to see W's.

Do you realize that getting the APR is a part of building that "foundation" "brick by brick"?

Without making the grades we lose schollys/bowl ban or more probation which causes lack of commitments and attrition.

So yea biggest win was being able to move forward in the program by bring the name and strength back to the foundation of Tennessee

Since athletic scholarships are only for a year, I think that players should be able to transfer with out restrictions after the scholarship is up. It only seems fair to me. And if coaches were worried about losing layers they should be able to offer four year scholarships.

This does happen. You just don't hear the official reasons. Non-revenue sports that don't carry full scholarships have the ability to reduce the aid amount too.

Free agency in the NCAA?

In that case, should the incoming studenet-athlete accept that 4 yr scholarship, he should be obligated to at least four years of service to his team, barring injury. This would help to cut down on marquee players leaving their respective schools after their junior or red-shirt sophomore year. If a player wants the flexibility to turn pro early then he can sign for the one year at a time scholarship as the system currently allows.

that is not true.

just because you think no one is under performing doesn't mean the coach is thinking that.

just from 2009 class the following non performers left (just because they don't get announced as being let go doesn't mean they were not convinced to transfer elsewhere)

Askew
Gordon
Jeffrey
Lamaison
Thornton
Nelson
Oliver
Revis
Schofield
Sykes
Williams

all were encouraged to not return..
