I apologize if this has been discussed before and if so mods plz merge. But i just heard andre ware say that one of the o-linemen for ole miss was put on academic scholarship when they signed him (not sure but he might've been from that class of 37 they had). So my question is with the amount of guys we're down from the 85 limit, could we possibly oversign from the 26 or 27 we're supposed to sign and since we're supposed to be bringing in some smart guys, could we put some on academic scholarship to get the numbers up more quickly?

football "smart guys" typically don't do well enough to earn a full tuition scholarship, much less one that covers tuition and board. they'd have to pay something out of pocket while being required to maintain at least a 3.0-3.5 gpa. no kid in his right mind would take that deal.

The only way that happens is if he is a TN kid who gets lottery scholarship money has a high GPA and big ACT score. This is possible, but even with that, it's awfully difficult to get a 'full ride' this way, and not many (if any) SEC caliber athletes would be willing to pay any tuition/room/board out of pocket (and don't forget those grossly overpriced textbooks...) when they could get that money PLUS athletic scholarship money...

As long as a kid is on academic scholarship, he cannot play football. It is just like putting him on a baseball scholarship -- the minute he joins the football team, his baseball scholarship turns counts against our football scholarship total. If what you are suggesting were possible, every team on earth would suddenly sprout a bunch of great scholars, lol.

There is only one way for it to not count against you football (and other sports) limit. If the kid in question earns an academic scholarship prior to any contact with that school's staff, the player can walk-on and it will not count against you. Alabama has a freshman kicker from Memphis that benefitted from this.

What if a kid's recruitment deems him an invited walk-on, and THEN he happens to have available scholly money in state? (Academic) They can't hold that against him can they?
