I have been thinking about this for a while. If you had the option to go play big time football for a big time football school or play big time football for an academic school such as Duke or Vandy what would you do?

Luckily some of the top programs now are also pretty decent schools (albeit not on the level of Duke/Vandy). UF, Texas, tOSU, USC and even Bama are all pretty darn good academic schools.

UGA is a decent academic school too....but like VolnNSkinsFan said, it depends what my chances to make it to the NFL were

alot of times if you started at a big time football program and graduated, but didnt make it to the pros...companies will hire you just to say that you work for them and have you meet and greet potential customers.

I'd go to a school like Stanford or GT where you get a good mix of both.

I think Alabama is a pretty average state school. It can't hold a candle to the other schools you mentioned academically.

Stanford, best of both really. They are on the verge of becoming a power, mark my words.

agreed

a letterman at notre dame has a more secure financial future than an MBA from Stanford

Sports school. You can get a solid degree from most any school.
For the most part, most employers don't really care where you got your degree anyways, as long as you have one. There are a few exceptions, but not many.

Bama's a top 40 public school and a top 40 law school overall. I'd say that's above average for a state school. UGA & Auburn are both ranked higher than Bama which I included more so from a football standpoint.

I honestly don't think I could turn down a free ride from Duke or Vandy.

agreed.
you get what you put in, when it comes to a college degree. a degree only gets your foot in the door, its what you do after that that makes a difference. other than vandy, i would say all the undergrad degrees in the SEC are comparable and about on the same playing level.

Agreed. Gimme the football powerhouse any day of the week.

A college degree and any sports fan immediately knowing who you are will beat a top notch degree 9 out of 10 times (As long as you are still an intelligent human being with skills off the field).

Disagree. If you want a middle of the road job and to make a good living, sure it will get you in the door. Every year, though, more and more college grads are coming out. Having a degree from a school like Stanford unlocks doors that a degree from Tennessee would not. It just creates more opportunities. However, if you were legit and had a great chance of making it to the NFL, then I would go to the school with a staff capable of putting me in the position to capitalize on that opportunity.

I dated a girl that graduated from MIT and was in grad school at Vandy. She said it's really just getting in that is the hard part, which I have also heard from Ivy leaguers I've known. However, I think those people have such high intellectual capacity, though, it just seems that way for them. I know going to a school like that would be harder for me, and I'm not afraid to admit it. MIT, that is. I could make it at Vandy. I'm 100% positive about that.

true... but how many players from Vandy/Duke/Harvard get drafted 1st round?

It just depends on what I plan on doing after college. If I want to be a lawyer/doctor/Business man, I would go to GT/Vandy/UNC/Duke/UVA/Harvard. If I wanted to play in the NFL, I would go to UT/Texas/Bama/OK/USC. If I was dumb as rocks and could play football, I would go to WVU

Georgia Tech is definitely a "best of both worlds" school. You CANNOT compare the academics of UGA, Alabama, UF, or even Climpsun to Georgia Tech. Dook and Vandy to a certain extent, yes. Dook is miserable at sports though (save basketball).

If I'm a stud athlete I'd go to a school where the academics are a little lighter so I could concentrate more on my "money maker" (football, basketball, etc)... but if I know that I don't really have a chance for the pro leagues, then I'd go to a good school to get that degree!

The person who said that certain schools open certain doors for careers is correct. I didn't have as high of a GPA coming out of Georgia Tech this year, but I think somebody would take me over somebody from say, Alabama, with a 3.8 GPA. It's just easier there.

Maybe you're high. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt because you probably didn't read my post correctly. I said Dook and Vandy (Vandy to a certain extent) are comparable. Dook is a marvelous school, and ranked higher than Tech. I simply said they weren't great at sports.

I accept your apology.
