The coaching staff is not interested in reaching for a big man prospect who is a short term fix but doesn't have a long term place in the program, because he will most likely be recruited over by the bigs that we are in on for the 2012 class.

Before some of you start raging about how CCM doesn't know what he is doing, we need depth in the post, blah blah blah... consider that if we did go get a JUCO player or project high schooler who was a short term answer he probably would be two things:

1) Not be that good compared to who we could get next year.
2) Not play much once said recruits next year get here.

Those two things would then subsequently cause some people on here to whine about a wasted scholarship, CCM doesn't know how to recruit, etc. In reality, there aren't many posts left at this point in the recruiting game. Our best bet is to keep what commitments we have and try to get the best players we can, posts or not, and hope that we can land guys like Stokes, Polythress, etc in next years class.

The one post that he believes the staff would take at this point is Jared Guest.

Go Vols.

eh, that works. I'm used to not having talented post play nowdays, so I'm sure Hall and Maymon can at least keep me suprised next season....

We also shouldn't confuse passing on bigs this year with sacrificing a season.

If Harris returns, then he, Hall and Maymon > the 05-06 trio of Wingate, Patterson, and Childress on a team that won quite a few games.

An excellent point. It sounds like the conditioning they are doing will allow them to play way more minutes than they did last year.

that, and you adjust to what you have, and sometimes players surprise us.

Did anyone think Josh Harrellson would be such an integral part of a Final Four run before this season started? Same with Greg Zoubek prior to Duke's title last year.

True, but that team also had excellent outside shooting, with a shorter 3-pt line. This team has depended on going inside.

What if Harris doesn't return? We will be very short of quality players at the post position if we don't bring in one post player this recruiting season.

I agree with this and with the OP. My opinion on recruiting a post player this year totally hinges on whether Harris stays or goes.

I prefer to let the coach second guess all of us armchair point guards. He has a better view of what is possible and available along with accountability for success. He is in the gym with the present players and has a better grasp of their capabilities than we do.

Do you really think he has a better grasp than we do? Amazing.

Lol... One point no one has brought up is that you don't have to get your pts in the paint from the "bigs." If you have slashers that can get into lanes, all you need the bigs to do is be aggressive on the glass. If TH stays, then he will provide a good deal of pts in the paint as well. How many pts per game did we get out of our 5 last season? We could've won a lot more games last season than we did had we finished the games instead of watching Melvin Goins' silent comedy theatrics...

Go Vols!!!

You don't have to get points in the paint but the problem is if Hopson leaves not too many proven slashers either. Opposing D can play much more aggressive on the perimeter if there is no one to threaten inside.

Not like Hopson was really a slasher either.

We still don't want to sign a big just because he is big. I know we need a big in the worst way, but getting someone who won't play would take up a scholarship for four years and provide no help. I would suggest that, if no "good" bigs are available until next year, wait until next year to sign one or two.

I don't disagree with you. However, if there is a big out there that could give us some depth at the position and provide meaningful minutes off the bench, seems we would consider signing them.

Coaches gonna coach. We'll see how it works out. I can't argue with the idea that it is pointless to just bring in a body that isn't going to do anything but be tall.

I know he hasn't deserved mention in the past but I think Woolridge is another you can add to the "bigs" category if he continues to respond as he has recently. He is not going to be a banger, but he has the hops to get over people on the boards. If Harris comes back and they essentially run a 3 guard line-up, you then have a 4 man rotation at the two power forward positions since you will be minus a true center. Remember we still have some long armed 6' 5-6" guys that can play the 3 along with Harris and maybe Woolridge. I think this is a smart move by Coach Zo.

If Woolridge plays his cards right, he should be able to earn some playing time next year-- assuming we don't sign any bigs.

I see no problem with that. I'd rather not waste a scholly on someone who shouldn't be playing at a big program.

I agree, except we don't have anybody on the team right now even close to the size of Harrellson or Zoubek.
