Greg Atkins OL coach, Dan Brooks DL coach, and Kurt Roper RB coach. These are the three areas where the Vols pretty much suck this year. I know the talent is down some on OL, so maybe Atkins is doing as good as can reasonably be expected? Brooks on the other hand has some guys to work with but the guard play has been awful. This is particularly worrisome considering that Brooks is not even responsible for coaching the DEs! Roper was Cut's guy. Last year the RBs were fine under Trooper and now they are atrocious. Part of it is due to injuries and part of it is due to lack of run blocking, but can any blame be laid at Roper's doorstep? Probably so.

I'm willing to give both the line coaches a pass this year considering how much talent they lost from last years team. Brooks especially. He's consistently put linemen into the NFL, and he's been one of the best D-Line coaches in the nation for years.

Roper, I don't know about.

It's absurd to include Brooks on that list. He is consistently one of the best coaches on the staff in my opinion.

It's hard to point fingers at Atkins or Roper because this is their first year and we have had issues that precede them. That said, I don't think either one has done anything special in their first year with the position.

None of the above coaches has had healthy talent all season. Sorry Billy, right bandwagon, poor timing.

I kind of doubt there will be any noisy dismissals this year (unless the Vols lose the next 3 games). Just wondered what other folks are thinking.

First of all, there are no Defensive Guards in our scheme. Second of all, the NFL is loaded with guys who owe their careers to Dan Brooks. Calling for his job is just plain nuts.

I think that pass blocking has been superb, and that Turk McBride is the only lineman that would start (as a defensive end) on any other club in the SEC.

The pass blocking has been good, but there just hasn't been any push for the running game. On the DL I rarely see pressure come up the middle this year unless it is from a LB.

You're showing your *ahem* knowledge with adding Brooks in there.

We might lose him, but if we do, it will be because he ends up as a new coach's D-Coordinator, possibly even at UNC.

Keeping Brooks the last few years has been a sigh of relief to anyone in the know, involved with this team.

Never had a problem with Brooks, Roper was an underwhelming hire

Pretty well covered already, but Brooks is one of the best position coaches we have. Considering the hits we've taken due to injury, graduation and the NFL, he's still doing a fine job.

OL & RBs need to pick it up, but way to early to call for their jobs. We don't have a game-breaking RB, with the possible exception of Coker - but its too early to tell on that one too. Lack of such RB will make running game look medicore. Pass blocking, on the other hand, has been good.

It also makes you wonder if Trooper really is a good coach. A lot of people don't give him much credit but when he coached the RBs they ran, now that he coaches the WRs they catch. Hard to argue with success.

Give Roper another year or two before we start talking about getting rid of him.

That said, its interesting that when Trooper got here we had two 1000 yard rushers (Houston and Riggs), then Trooper got Foster to play extremely well even though he was a third-string rb. Now Trooper goes to the wr's and Meachem realizes his talent and is a top 3 receiver this year, while Swain and Smith have also been very good. The dropoff has been surprising, but I think it's just as much the o-line's fault, if not more.

Alot of people must be nuts, he got 1000 yrds out of Gerald "my daddy played pro ball so I must be good" Riggs and Houston in the same yr and now with the exception of the 1st qtr against LSU has our WRs playing like pro bowlers (compared to last yr at least). TT is a fine coach and the Brooks issue has been coververed well enough.:good!:
