AFI's Top 10 films in 10 genres

in my opinion, Star Wars shouldn't be number one. Neither should Space Odyssey. But at least the right director is at number one. My vote would go to Clockwork Orange.

Interesting that they don't have a category to fit "Citizen Kane" in. They made romantic comedy and courtroom drama, but not the standard comedy and drama.

Looking through the lists, there are a handful of movies i would flip flop around, but it is still a very good list. Just about every movie (save the Star Wars movies) are must sees imo.

Not really sure I'd even put Clockwork Orange in the sci-fi genre.

You don't have to like it, but Star Wars is the most famous sci-fi movie(s) of all time.

These lists are all opinions, anyway. I hardly ever agree with any list I read.

I agree, vbh. I thought Caddyshack looked out of place w/ the rest of the sports movies.

Caddyshack looks out of place on any top 10 list, except for, maybe the top 10 over rated movies of all time.

2001: A Space Odyssey gets a lot of consideration because it was one of the first, if not the first, "sci fi" film that actually had more science than fiction.

Going to have to disagree there. It's a classic. There are some cheesy parts for sure, but Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Rodney Dangerfield more than make up for that.

Some good movies in there, but when I don't see some of my personal favorites - Braveheart, Outlaw Josey Wales...I have complaints.

I would have substituted Outlaw Josey Wales for either McCabe & Mrs Miller (I'm not a big fan of Warren Beatty) or Cat Ballou (There are better Westerns than this).

I actually like Goodfellas over Godfather Pt. II. Scorcese managed to capture such an epic, sweeping view of so many eras and make it flow. I also firmly belive Ray Liotta's Henry Hill is one of the most compelling anti-heros ever. He turns from a protagonist into a guy you really want to despise but just can't. And the way he turns out at the end of the movie seems like it should be fine, but just feels so tragic. I feel bad about myself for feeling bad for him at the end.

I agree about the Ray Liotta thing. People always seem to say that Joe Pesci made that movie. But I thought Ray knocked his role out of the park in that film. And as good as Pesci and Deniro were, Liotta was 10x better IMO. The narration he provided throughout the film was brilliant.

Goodfellas makes it into my top 10 overall movies, so I would put it ahead of G2 as well. Also, a little surprised that Scarface was as low as #10.

QFT. Ray Liotta's performance is one of my all-time favorites. Goodfellas runs away best mob/gangster movie in my opinion.

Goodfellas is one of my top all time favorite movies.

I've never seen any of the Godfather movies so I can't compare the two.

I think Scarface is vastly overrated. I hated it & can't understand the big deal about it.

Tombstone wasn't even mentioned in the Western catagory.

Rudy wasn't mentioned in the Sports.

The Usual Suspects was in the 10th spot for mystery.

I don't see Shawshank Redemption anywhere.

The Usual Suspects is AWESOME and a mystery. I have no problems with that one except I might put it higher.

Shawshank, like Citizen Kane, didn't have a category in this list.
