Who's the oldest?

Youngest?

The in-betweeners?

Should age matter for our new coach?

SEC football history lesson: Current head coaches

Alabama Crimson Tide
Coach: Nick Saban
Age: 60
Age when hired: 55
Record at Alabama: 61-12
From SEC territory? No, but he is from the South – Fairmont, W.Va.
Previous SEC experience? Yes. Was the head coach of LSU’s 2003 national championship team.
Previous college head coaching experience? Yes
The Skinny: Alabama wouldn’t take no for an answer from Saban, and the persistence has paid off in the form of two national championships. Enough said.

Auburn Tigers
Coach: Gene Chizik
Age: 50
Age when hired: 46
Record at Auburn 31-15
From SEC territory? Yes, Tarpon Springs, Fla.
Previous SEC experience? Yes. Played at Florida and coached at Auburn.
Previous college head coaching experience? Yes
The Skinny: There are exceptions to every rule, and Chizik’s hiring at Auburn was most definitely one of those in the SEC because of his previous won-loss record. He was 5-19 at Iowa State and coming off a 2-10 season when the Tigers brought their former defensive coordinator – the 2004 Broyles Award winner – back to The Plains. It looked like a great move in his second season when the Tigers went 14-0 and won the national title. Now, he’s on the hot seat, and there are no guarantees he finishes the season.

Florida Gators

Coach: Will Muschamp
Age: 41
Age when hired: 39
Record at Florida: 13-6
From SEC territory? Yes, born in Rome, Ga., and raised in Gainesville, Fla.
Previous SEC experience? Yes, played at Georgia and coached at Auburn and LSU
Previous college head coaching experience? No
The Skinny: One of the top defensive coordinators in the country and Mack Brown’s heir apparent at Texas before returning home to Florida. He has the Gators at 6-0 this season and No. 2 in the BCS standings.

Georgia Bulldogs

Coach: Mark Richt
Age: 52
Age when hired: 39
Record at Georgia 111-39
From SEC territory? Yes, born in Omaha, Neb., but went to high school in Boca Raton, Fla.
Previous SEC experience? No
Previous college head coaching experience? No
The Skinny: The former Miami Hurricanes quarterback had one of the top offensive in the nation when he was a coordinator at Florida State. He’s led the Bulldogs to two SEC championships in 11-plus seasons, and his current team is 5-1 and 11th in the BCS standings.

Kentucky Wildcats

Coach: Joker Phillips
Age: 49
Age when hired: 46
Record at Kentucky 12-20
From SEC territory? Yes, Franklin, Ky.
Previous SEC experience? Yes, played and coached at Kentucky
Previous college head coaching experience? No
The Skinny: Being a Kentucky guy born and bred probably won’t get Phillips a fourth season. The former Kentucky coach in waiting – or head coach of the offense, as the Wildcats called it – Phillips’ team is 1-6 this season, and he hasn’t had a winning record there.

LSU Tigers
Coach: Les Miles
Age: 58
Age when hired: 51
Record at LSU 81-19
From SEC territory? No, Elyria, Ohio
Previous SEC experience? No
Previous college head coaching experience? Yes
The Skinny: Miles never won more than nine games in four years at Oklahoma State, but he’s led the Tigers to a national championship, two trips to the BCS championship game and two SEC titles.

Mississippi State Bulldogs

Coach: Dan Mullen
Age: 40
Age when hired: 36
Record at Mississippi State 27-17
From SEC territory? No, born in Drexel Hill, Pa., and went to high school in Manchester, N.H.
Previous SEC experience? Yes, Florida
Previous college head coaching experience? No
The Skinny: Had one of the top-scoring offenses in the nation before taking the job in Starkville. Mullen’s Bulldogs are now 6-0 and 12th in the BCS standings.

Missouri Tigers
Coach: Gary Pinkel
Age: 60
Age when hired: 48
Record at Missouri 88-58
From SEC territory? No, Akron, Ohio
Previous SEC experience? No
Previous college head coaching experience? Yes
The Skinny: Pinkel, the former Toledo coach, has done a nice job at Missouri, leading the Tigers to seven straight bowl games, but he’s finding life in the SEC difficult. Missouri is 3-4 right now and still looking for its first SEC win.

Ole Miss Rebels

Current coach: Hugh Freeze
Age: 43
Age when hired: 42
Record at Ole Miss: 4-3
From SEC territory? Yes, born in Oxford, Miss., and raised in Mississippi
Previous SEC experience: Yes, at Ole Miss
Previous college head coaching experience? Yes
The Skinny: Freeze was more well known as Michael Oher’s high school coach than for his achievements on the field, but he was an innovative offensive mind. He led Arkansas State program to a 10-win season in 2011 before landing the job in Oxford.

South Carolina Gamecocks

Coach: Steve Spurrier
Age: 67
Age when hired: 59
Record at South Carolina 61-36
From SEC territory? Yes, born in Miami Beach, Fla., and went to high school in Johnson City, Tenn.
Previous SEC experience? Yes, played and coached at Florida
Previous college head coaching experience? Yes
The Skinny: The Ol’ Ball Coach is much older than he was during his glory days at Florida – when he led the Gators to a national title and six SEC crowns. But he seems to finally have the Gamecocks rolling in his eighth season. South Carolina is 6-1 and No. 7 in the BCS standings after last week’s two-point loss to LSU.

Tennessee Volunteers
Current coach: Derek Dooley
Age: 44
Age when hired: 41
Record at Tennessee: 14-17
From SEC territory? Yes, Athens, Ga.
Previous SEC experience? Yes, at Georgia and LSU
Previous college head coaching experience? Yes
The Skinny: Another unorthodox hire who hasn’t worked out. Before becoming the Vols’ 22nd head coach, Dooley had compiled a 17-20 record over three seasons at Louisiana Tech. He had losing records in two of those years. But hey, he had the pedigree. His dad, Vince, was the legendary Georgia coach and athletic director, and Derek had worked under Nick Saban at LSU and with the Dolphins.

Texas A&M Aggies
Coach: Kevin Sumlin
Age: 48
Age when hired: 47
Record at Texas A&M 5-1
From SEC territory? Yes, born in Brewton, Ala., but went to high school in Indianapolis
Previous SEC experience? Sort of. He was the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M 10 years before the Aggies joined the SEC.
Previous college head coaching experience? Yes
The Skinny: Sumlin was 12-1 at Houston, with the lone loss coming in the Conference USA title game, in 2011. He went 35-17 in four seasons with the Cougars, and his Aggies are 18th in the BCS standings.

Vanderbilt Commodores

Current coach: James Franklin
Age: 40
Age when hired: 38
Record at Vanderbilt 8-11
From SEC territory? No, Langhorne, Pa.
Previous SEC experience? No
Previous college head coaching experience? No
The Skinny: Franklin was the coach in waiting at Maryland before landing the gig in Nashville and almost instantly bringing the Commodores program to life. A very passionate coach who’s developed a reputation as a top-notch recruiter, Franklin will probably continue to have his name mentioned with job openings this year. Will he stay put?

Since when is West Virginia South? Even if you make that stretch, Fairmont itself is 15 miles from the Pennsylvania border. Having lived in WV I can tell you that the culture of north eastern WV is more like Western Pennsylvania than it is Southern.
