He is the inside LB, he would not look as slow if we had DE's that turned the play back inside or at least slowed it down.

We see him chasing a lot because he is the only one near the ball. He is one man without a lot of help, he never takes a snap off and truly gives his all.

I hope he comes back for his senior year and has some speed on the outside to help him out.

Lay off the kid, he doesn't have much help.

I thought he played like a mad man! He isn't the worlds fastest man, but like you said, he doesn't have a lot of help.

Everyone said Brandon Spikes was too slow to play LB in the nfl, he's doing just fine.

i agree he is doing the best he can-- hopefully if Maggitt ever returns he can help ease the load a bit.

I like AJ's game. The one criticism I have for him is that he doesn't shed blocks very well. Needs to get better at that, but I'd never criticize his effort or intensity. He plays as hard as anyone I've seen.

AJ is a beast. IMO the best defensive player on the team. Maybe the best player on the whole team.

He is just a step slow. I mean besides that he is a solid mlb

LOL.. I saw him chase down just about every rb fla had. He looks slow because he's on the field for EVERY SINGLE PLAY. We have no depth so he has to stay in the whole game, and when your offense is GARBO, your defense is on the field that much more which makes him that much more tired.. SMH AJ is a freaking BOSS

This is true! Our DE's are terrible at containment, which is the primary job of a DE.

Unfortunately Murphy exposed this. Our inside run D is good, but Murphy was able to get outside and move the chains far to often. JMO

Props to AJ. Our problem is that we don't have DEs with the discipline or speed to seal the edge and turn the runs inside where AJ can get them. Getting Maggitt and Vereen back will do wonders for AJ's game.

AJ still has room for improvement but he gives his all and never takes a play off. He knows this and he pushed himself to be better. Does anyone on here think for a second he did not want to sack the FL QB?

He's always having to shed blocks because the Dline cannot hold their own. The best linebackers have a stud line that soaks up blocks to allow them to run free. If you put AJ behind Bama's, LSU's or FLA's Dline I think you would be surprised how much faster he looked.

The two jobs of a DE are to Rush the passer and establish the edge. Jacques is killing us because he can't do either. He is the epitome of "Look like Tarzan, play like Jane." The fast QB's make them look completely retarded out there. How many third and longs were converted because the receivers were covered and the QB ran for 10 yards? He sustained drives that had we had competent DEs would have never been converted. I am not asking for a Jadeveon Clowney, just a half decent pair of DE's that play smart and stay in position. Even tough they aren't the most physically gifted... If we had that, we would be a much better defense.

It also doesn't help that we can't keep a drive going and have so many 3 and outs which is making our depth on Defense really show...

AJ's a good player but I think he draws criticism for being something he isn't on the field. If he were on another team he'd be viewed differently.

He's played well. The D should be feeding him, but he's instead been asked to run sideline to sideline. That's not his fault.

Agree. I know we eventually want to be an uptempo offense but do you think the team as a whole might benefit more from trying to slow the game down this year? It could keep our defense off the field maybe a little longer. And with our supposedly top notch o-line we should be able to control the ball at least a little against some teams with our run game, though that wouldn't have been the case yesterday.

We just seem to be better suited to try and do that this year, and built for more of a ball control offense currently. Not to mention slowing down the offense might help some of the freshman skill position players get their assignments right and they would have a little more time to make reads and figure out exactly what they are supposed to be doing.

AJ is listed at 6'2" 243lbs. Not exactly the right size for WR covering speed.

However, if our DE's could contain a little and force plays to the inside, AJ has about 20 tackles against FL instead of a paltry 10 tackles. hint: turn sarcasm detector to ON.

AJ will be a 1st rounder. Bank on that.

He would fit right in with about 75% of the leagues defenses. It may be a passing league right now, but if you can't stop the run and make plays...you got no shot.

And that happens to be A.J.'s niche.

the only thing I saw that I could criticize him about was the missed tackles but it happens I guess. He can't help that he lacks 4 flat speed. He's a solid LB IMO

I agree. AJ was all over the field on Saturday. To me, it seems as if our D tackles were running too many stunts and the ends kept pinching down too far and got walled off easily when the play broke to the outside.
