I do not know if this has been discussed or given the credit it should have, but AJ Johnson is or could be high in our record book in several defensive categories after this season...

Career Tackles:

AJ Johnson 324 is outside the top 10, but 349 is #10 and it span all the way to Andy Spiva's 547...

Assisted Tackles

AJ Johnson at 156 is at #4 and 193 is Andy Spiva's record.

Solo Tackles

HE has 159 solo tackles and the top 10 begins at 227...
He had 59 Solo in 2013 and 71 in 2012. He will need 69 in 2014 to break the top 10...

He has had a great career but I was shocked at the amount of records he could be in reach of...

If he improves his speed from last year, he could easily reach the top 10. He's a smart, strong player. But I would like to see him gain some speed.

He'd have to have an All-American, Bednarik, Butkus, Heisman type season to get the #1 spot. But he could definitely do the assisted tackle achievement. By all means, I hope he has that kind of season. He doesn't get enough credit. I understand that he has been burnt in coverage and given up big plays but with the past two sub-par statistical and talented defensive seasons, he has shown that he is a beast on the field. He is around the ball instinctively which is a player I would want on my team.

I'm just glad he's back. We needed that senior leadership this year and we've got it. It's gonna be awesome seeing him and Maggitt out there together again.

AJ is all business. Regardless of the record I think he will go in the first three rounds of the draft next year for sure. He has similar size (8 lbs lighter, 1 inch taller) as Jerod Mayo who was drafted 10th overall in '08.

As previously mentioned, his senior leadership is most valuable to us this season. Very excited to see him have an even bigger influence this year

Of course I would love to see him get his name among some of the UT greats but if he doesn't have that great of a season statistically, well, that just might mean he is finally getting some help out there. That might not be too bad either :)

Good thread OP. Here's to wishing AJ has his best year yet, and that he's able to continue to rep TN at the next level.

Barring injury, he'll crack the top 5 on the career tackles list. He probably won't catch Spiva's ridiculous record, but 2nd place (Jamie Rotella's 413) is easily attainable.

If our offense can't score points, AJ will have many chances to break many records!
