AJ Johnson

too slow for either spot IMO

who is coming next year to help with this lack of speed ? i do know the lack of speed is everywhere on the D and is it poor angles or the lack of speed with them angles and shouldn't they be using some zone to cover up this lack of speed?

See I may agree with the DE part...BUT he plays every down and is always near the ball. He hits holes fairly well, problem is his D Line doesn't help him what so ever and he struggles getting out to the edge. AJ catches a lot of neg rap....but I still think he is our best backer. Makes good reads for the most part from what I've seen.

If he had a replacement and could stay fresher I think he'd be way more dominate!

thank god someone on this board knows football. you don't have a DLine then obviously mike looks bad.

the people who say otherwise are the ones who don't understand why if a QB gets sacked every other play its probably not because he doesn't have "pocket presence" or awareness. its probably because his OLine is ****.

AJ is slow on passing plays...but I believe with a better D line that would actually keep the O line from reaching the second tier, which ours cannot, would help him out also...some of his bad angles are bc he is trying to get past O lineman that our D line couldn't hold up...but would be interested to see him at DE...with Maggitt in the middle

I've heard a lot of people saying Maggitt at the end and keep AJ where hes at.

Something like Maggitt projects more in the NFL as an end....not sure. halfway think we may see a position change for him next year especially since he has redshirted it wouldn't be a terrible time. He simulated Clowney for the practices before SCarolina....

also its not real hard to play around ONE PLAY MAKER in the entire defense. Ask Clowney how his season's going.

I remember a year ago when it wasn't the players fault, it was all coaching

Same results this year and its not coaching

Confusing

point well made except we're not talking players in general we're talking one player...one of the only ones that WILL be talked about because hes a leader.

truth is Dooley wouldve got a few more years and we'd have gotten 8-9 wins last season had defense been even remotely decent.

yes last year people were ready to burn the house down and blame that all on coaching. and maybe it was that the defense is made up of a bunch of untalented players individually but I think its much more likely that the problem last year had a lot MORE to do with using a scheme that didn't fit the players and an inconsistency in coaching.

I think we have a remotely competent defense last year and Dooley is still here this year. But I do believe he would not be able to get past this year under really any circumstances other than Hunter Bray and CP all staying.

I swear our fans have this delusion that if a player isn't a unanimous All-American and lock as a future All-Pro, then he sucks. Why can't anyone just be happy that we have an All-SEC MLB on our defense?

And if you think he can't play on Sundays because of his speed, then you really need to have your brain examined. MLBs aren't supposed to run with WRs. MLBs SHOULD get beat in coverage almost every play (unless your WR is slow as snot). That's why its such a good matchup to exploit! AJ is plenty fast as a MLB... thats why he's near the ball on every play

I don't really blame AJ as much as the inability of our D linemen from getting off blocks. Our LB's are slow compared to LB's from the past such as Raynoch Thompson, Al Wilson , Omar gaither, and Jerod Mayo. However, they also had good D linemen playing in front of them.

And you will all be pissed when he doesn't say "Tennessee" when he's announced as a starter on Monday night football someday. Keep it up guys.

can I have some of what your smoking? Plz... he's a star in a poor defence doesn't make him a nfl player seems like it takes him all day to get to the sideline, bad angels, and slow

Coaching is a big part of the poor play, but its mostly on the players, they consistently take poor angles, get sucked inside on runs. The outside linebackers and safeties are the main problems, and it doesn't help that the DL gets very little penetration.

AJ keeps bringin' the guys down. Not sure what else everyone expects of him. His name gets called more than others.

he makes lots of tackles...after 4-6 yards. when he starts making those tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage i'll be happy

AJ made a wonderful tackle behind the LOS yesterday - quick read of the guard pulling, followed right behind him and nailed the RB in the backfield.

AJ is a very good LB.
He plays his heart out for the Vols.
He's classy AND hard-nosed.
And he stays out of trouble.

I'm thankful he's a Vol.

What spot can he play Larry?
If he has any hope of playing on sundays, he must be able to play a position on an SEC defense at a high level.

he will give LB a shot, not near big enough to be an NFL DE. I suspect he stays at LB and maybe he makes it. I have my doubts but it is just my opinion. I'm not an NFL expert. Rarely watch the game but do keep up with drafts

they are recruiting more speed. If you heard Jones comments after game, he knows we lack speed to compete. He knew that before the season started but could not say so publicly. no coach would. But when it becomes obvious to the whole world, he may as well say so.

the problem will be, outside of the Juco signees, be depending on a lot of freshman. Schools can get away with playing one or two true freshman but that means everyone else has to be very good. Playing a bunch of them, you are looking at losing a bunch of games, again

Is this where we transition to how much McCullers blows? I'm ready......

AJ tries his best. He's just in trouble in space and that's scary for an lb. Kindof wish he could play some hybrid de or something. Surely he can play better de than jaques. Seems like every qb run was right passed his right shoulder. At least get upfield and use the sideline or force the play inside.

That would mean that he is actually good and coaching might be an issue

Ahhh someone actually gets it. Several years of bad coaching has hurt aj like the rest of our team. Give him another year to improve pad leverage and angles and he will be a first or second round pick

just put him back at wildcat and be done with it..... no seriously, what do you think the impact would be at this point if all things equal, if Curt Maggitt had been playing all this year at 100%? Interesting to think about.

simply improve this kid's angles and vision and it will be night and day improvement. Book it.

I want Maggitt back there with him along with that stellar class we got coming in. I think we'll see even more good things from him when that happens.

I think that 2 yrs of terrible coaching prior to this yr really hurt AJ. Yes he is slow but better angles will help him some. I think he reaches for tackles to much and tries to just throw around the ball carrier instead of running thru the tackle. Where I have been most disappointed is his inability to fill the gap on iso type plays. He reaches out for the blocker just like he does when tackling. That allows him to get blocked and the rb go right by him. He needs one more year in college and I think he will drastically improve next season.
