Kirby Smart has been a "name" coaching candidate for a while and I'm wondering if he will ever get a major head coaching job (I think I've heard Georgia is his alma mater and a potential position for him in the future) or will Saban hand the program off to him at some point? I've always been kind of curious if the guy could be successful outside of the Saban coaching tree.

Smart is well taken care of and can cherry pick his next job much the wake way Will Muschamp did. He doesn't have to pick among dumpster fires and reclamation projects. I'd expect his next job to be somewhere like South Carolina.

Smart makes over 1 million per year. He's not going to take over some crap mid-major program. He will either get some big name job in the next couple of years, or he will take over for Saban when Nick is ready to hang it up.

Not sure why the question would come up, but being at the flagship university in the SEC seems like a good place to start. Over a mil a year to just whistle and watch the recruits come running, while winning the recruiter of the year and world's greatest assistant coach award. Having a defensive mindset that would rival the upper echelon of nuclear physicist, makes for a great fit at the mecca of college coaching, the university of Alabama. Until next time.

He is coach in waiting at Bama

The same was said about Muschump when Mack Brown would step down at Texas. We all know what happened there.
People claim that it's in their contracts, etc, etc. Nobody knows, so these bammers claim to know, but they don't even know how many brothers and sisters they have.

I've yet to see a coach in waiting work out like it's supposed to. It would be extremely hard for anyone to turn down a job that will double or triple their salary especially with the crazy guarantees and buyouts in contracts these days. I agree with the poster above that he won't go to a dumpster fire, but he will go somewhere soon if someone offers him enough money(would be dumb not to).
Also, let's not forget that Bama was a dumpster fire when Saban took over. They got extremely lucky that Rich Rod turned them down and they backed into Saban as he was definitely not their first choice. Before him they were in a 10+ year rut of horrible coaches and far from the class of the SEC as their fan's like to say now. Makes you realize how hard it is to find the right guy and how few of them there are. Who knows if Smart is even any good? Bama got caught cheating multiple times as they desperately tried to get back to the top of the SEC in the late 90s and early 2000s. It took them hitting the lottery on Saban to get them there but they missed on a few before that.

my favorite was the one who never saw the field because he got caught with the hootchie cootchie dancers.

You think Tennessee is then? If not Alabama, then who?

All the comments are humorous. Shula was 10-3 in his last year at Alabama. I'm sure Dooley would have given much to have that sort of record in the SEC.
