I know it's no shock to say something about Alabama is an embarrassment but things are getting nuttier than ever.

In the Republican governor primary we have 2 main contenders:

Bradley Byrne (overwhelming favorite until recently) and
Tim (we speak English in Alabama) James.

What's driving me nuts is the anti-Byrne ads are attacking him for:

believing in evolution!

"On the school board, Byrne supported teaching evolution, said evolution best explains the origin of life -- even recently said the Bible is only partially true." Another voice closes the ad by saying Byrne is "trying to look conservative."

I kid you not.

The sad part is that it is working and James may end up with the nod.

I'm guessing most of those you debate with regarding science and religion would not disqualify a candidate for believing in evolution.

I'd be willing to bet on that, if they were blind to my challenge of it. How many conservative people make a deal out of Obama's Islamic father? Or would specifically bring up Romney's religion during the primaries?

Do you see this as the typical "move toward the base" in the primary then move to the middle in the general? Can James win the election on this and the English speaking type issues?

All the "Speak English" stuff reminds me of this:

EDIT: Pic too big.

Were a pretty red state - the R candidate has the upper hand.

From what I know of James, he won't move much toward the middle.

Our current Gov. (Riley - republican) has done a pretty good job for 8 years and is nowhere near as right on these issues as James.

James is also riding a "non-politician" wave. He emphasizes "common sense" and that he's a business man.

That seems to be working too (other guy is a lawyer).

Count me as someone that believes in a Creator. However, I don't see that as:

1) running counter to the idea of evolution
2) having any impact on a candidate's qualifications

Unless someone is a religious zealot and clearly drives policy that way I don't give a crap about what religion they are.

I'm betting those that do care are a pretty narrow minority.

That's what I'm afraid of. I used to worry about Judge Roy Moore. Now I'm worried about James.

I'll vote Artur Davis (D) before I vote for James.

Moore has the same 12 people vote for him every year, so he's a non factor, but James is really ticking me off. I don't think I could ever vote for Davis, so I may have to vote myself for both Governor and US Senator if its a James/Davis match up.

What do you expect from a state that has only had to public funerals for public figures. One for George Wallace and the other for Bear Bryant?
