This goes to show you how little the media does its research. Every sports caster proclaims the Tide's 12 NCs, but in reality I bet not one of them can tell you how those so-called NCs were derived. Well I can tell you because I got the information from Alabama's Sports Information department. Here is the breakdown of the Tide's supposedly 12 NCs:
Voted NC by Associated Press - 6
Voted NC by Litten House Rating Service - 2
Voted NC by Dukel Rating Service - 1
Voted NC by Williamson Rating Service - 1
Voted NC by The Helms FB Foundation - 1
Voted NC by The New York Times - 1
Total claimed NCs - 12
As you can see Alabama has never "won" any national titles but merely have been voted and really only 6 times have they been voted NC by a national media source - that being the Associated Press. Yet the current media/sportecasters/Alabama players/fan would have you believe that they have won 12 titles granted by the highest authority.
Now if you consider all the various sources who have proclaimed NCs to So. Cal/Notre Dame these schools each could claim 14 NCs. Tennessee was awarded the NC in 1951 by the Associated Press and in 1998 by the BCS/AP. The Vols were also voted NCs in 1938 {Littenhouse/Dukel}, 1939 {Dukel/Williamson}, 1940 {Littenhouse/Dukel}, 1956 {Dukel} and 1967 {Dukel/Littenhouse}. Therefore, using all the sources claimed by Alabama, Tennessee has 7 NCs. IF you use only the Associated Press/BCS then Tennessee would have 2 NCs and Alabama would have 6 NCs. However, Dukel/Littenhouse/Williamson Rating Services are accepted by the NCAA and are reflected in their records. However, 2 of Alabama's sources - Helms FB Foundation/New York Times are not accepted by the NCAA and therefore according to NCAA records Alabama is credited with only 10 NCs - not the 12 they claim.
