Palin bridge to nowhere line angers many Alaskans | Reuters

During her first speech after being named as McCain's surprise pick as a running mate, Palin said she had told Congress "'thanks but no thanks' on that bridge to nowhere."

In the city Ketchikan, the planned site of the so-called "Bridge to Nowhere," political leaders of both parties said the claim was false and a betrayal of their community, because she had supported the bridge and the earmark for it secured by Alaska's Congressional delegation during her run for governor.

The bridge, a span from the city to Gravina Island, home to only a few dozen people, secured a $223 million earmark in 2005. The pricey designation raised a furor and critics, including McCain, used the bridge as an example of wasteful federal spending on politicians' pet projects.

When she was running for governor in 2006, Palin said she was insulted by the term "bridge to nowhere," according to Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein, a Democrat, and Mike Elerding, a Republican who was Palin's campaign coordinator in the southeast Alaska city.

"People are learning that she pandered to us by saying, I'm for this' ... and then when she found it was politically advantageous for her nationally, abruptly she starts using the very term that she said was insulting," Weinstein said.

Palin's spokeswoman in Alaska was not immediately available to comment.

sort of like that Born Alive Infant Protection Act in Illinois, for it before being against it.

I wonder how some of this stuff will have an affect on the campaign.

0 percent

If more and more stories come out it could. Being fresh gives a perception to some that she has no flaws but the more they expose or come out with, true or not, will hurt. I just think everything is on the table with Obama, people know all about the Muslim story or the flag lapel story. He isn't going to slip much further than 45 percent as he is now while Palin can only go down from here. Just my opinion.

Much of the early stuff is being debunked - the creationism, the cutting funding for mentally challenged children, the Alaskan Independence Party, the Pat Buchannan supporter, the book banning - all debunked.

Likewise, the bridge to nowhere is campaign rhetoric. She's inflating her position as does every other politician - I think people are smart enough to recognize that.

Hopefully, I will feel better about her when she speaks for herself.

As for your debunking? She is for Creationism being taught in our schools, She did improve challenged childrens funding, She gave support to the AIP and her husband was a member until she became governor, I dont care about supporting wacky pat or not, The book banning was something she wanted to do but thought better of it.

Not sure how you are forming your debunking views - I used Factcheck.org and some others.

On creationism - she thinks it's okay if it comes up in discussion in schools but did not advocate it be part of the curriculum or that any creationism advocates should be hired by schools. She pledged not to pursue it in her run for Governer.

Not sure what support to AIP entails.

Not sure how you conclude she wanted to ban books - the list that was circulated is false and as far as I can see she never named a single book for banning.

Again - it's early and maybe more statements will come out.

Most problematic is that news personnel used the bogus information in stories and questioning of Palin supporters without verifying the facts.

What about the story today that accused Palin of getting per diem while at home. True/False? Does it matter if true?

And, like most others, I'm very interested to see Palin campaigning for herself and addressing critics on the issues.

If she is at home why is she getting paid travel expenses?

Is that what happened here?

If she's home but entertaining or is forced to live on the local economy, shouldn't per diem apply? I always charge my company for my expenses while I'm dealing with potential partners or participants.

I would rather my money build a bridge that will get some use than to a dead beat that won't get off his ass and get a job, which is what obama will do with it!

there is no standard anymore. we believe exactly what we want to believe, in the face of evidence to the contrary. we can just say, "liberal media" or "irresponsible journalism" whenever we want, and poof! what we want becomes reality.

very little has been de-bunked beyond the fact that Trig is in fact her child.

why be ashamed that she wanted to clean up her town a little? why be ashamed that she wanted to ban some books or encourage teaching a completely false theory as science? why be ashamed that she courted Alaskans (hubby included) who thought the state might be better off on its own?

she has de-bunked none of this herself, as someone else posted. we MAY get a tiny peek when wimpy Charlie Gibson gives her a platform to say whatever she wants. but I think it'll just reinforce that she's perfect in every way.

Look under User CP -> Settings and Options -> Edit ignore list

thank you kindly.

If I were there, I'd buy you a nice, big plate of Texas brisket and smoked sausage, and a tall, frosty Shiner Bock as a token of gratitude - if you're into that sort of thing, of course.

So this is what you believe about her? Based on what? Some blogs and rumors repeated by media commentators? I thought you had higher standards than that.

How are you forming your opinions on her - it appears you have already formed them.
