All three RBs will play

3 headed attack sounds good, but some backs need reps during the game to get in a groove. But it would be nice to plug in fresh legs every series.

Foster will be the main back, but I'm excited to see Hardesty and Coker in there. Interested to see how that weight loss will improve Cokers game. As far as Hardesty I am hoping we see more of that power that was so short due to injury last year.

The only problem with having three is that it is tough for someone to really get into a groove.

I dont think they are talking about it to the extent of getting someone out of their groove. I think it is more getting them a break when they are dead tired and need to be refreshed. SEC RB is too grueling to be 100% effective for 30+ carries. If Foster is in a groove I think they will allow him to go until he proves he is no longer groov-ified.

I think they'll give Foster a rest after he gets 200 yards against Cal. Those 18 or so plays should only take him to halftime, giving the others lots of time to run as well.

1994 M.Phillips 147 yds 3.3 avg 4 TDs
1994 TEAM 231.2 yards-per-game rushing average

From 1995-1997, the Vols used primarily a single back throughout the seasons, these years also coincided with P.Manning's sophomore thru senior seasons, and the Vols first 3000+ yard passing seasons.
1995 J.Graham 1438 yds 5.3 avg 12 TDs (TEAM 179.3 ypg)
1996 J.Graham 797 yds 4.6 avg 11 TDs (TEAM 125.8 ypg)

1998 T.Henry 970 yds 5.5 avg 7 TDs
1998 T.Stephens 477 yds 4.5 avg 4 TDs
1998 S.Bryson 200 yds 9.5 avg 4 TDs
1998 TEAM 211.3 yards-per-game rushing average*
* T.Martin had 287 yards rushing and 7 rushing TDs

1999 J.Lewis 816 yds 4.5 avg 7 TDs
1999 T.Henry 790 yds 6.3 avg 8 TDs
1999 O.Smith 189 yds 6.1 avg 4 TDs
1999 TEAM 191.3 yards-per-game rushing average*
* T.Martin had 317 yards rushing and 9 rushing TDs

In 2000, T.Henry (1314 yds 5.3 avg 11 TDs) and T.Stephens (359 yds 4.4 avg 7 TDs) were the only productive backs. The rushing average dropped to 162.7 yards-per-game.

In 2001, T.Stephens (1464 yds 5.0 avg 10 TDs) carried the load. The Vols passed for the 5th most yards in school history. The rushing average dropped to 154.1 yards-per-game.

In 2002, the Vols tried to return to a multi-back attack. However, the overall production was not there....
2002 C.Houston 779 yds 5.1 avg 6 TDs
2002 J.Davis 569 yds 4.6 avg 10 TDs
2002 D.Tinsley 202 yds 4.5 avg 0 TDs
2002 T.Fleming 162 yds 4.8 avg 1 TD
The rushing average dropped to 150.5 yards-per-game.

In 2003, Tinsley changed positions to give Riggs more carries. No back was able to distance themselves from the pack. Fleming's role as a runner was reduced. The offense passed for the 4th most yards in school history....
2003 C.Houston 744 yds 5.0 avg 2 TDs
2003 J.Davis 565 yds 4.6 avg 8 TDs
2003 G.Riggs 207 yds 4.5 avg 1 TD
The rushing average dropped to 138.5 yards-per-game.

In 2004, we saw the emergence of talent from the group of highly recruited backs, and a close return to the Vols power game from the 90's...
2004 G.Riggs 1107 yds 5.7 avg 6 TDs
2004 C.Houston 1005 yds 5.6 avg 8 TDs
2004 D.Yancey 116 yds 4.8 avg 1 TD
2004 TEAM 186.0 yards-per-game rushing average

After the previous season, hope was high that the Vols rushing attack had finally returned to its dominant form from the 1990's. However, in 2005 the rush offense took a huge step backwards, rushing for less yards ever under Phil Fulmer. It didn't help that Riggs was injured. And to make matters worse for the offense, the passing yardage was the lowest the Vols have had in the last ten seasons. The total offensive yardage was its lowest since 1981. The rushing average dropped to 128.3 yards-per-game and it could have been worse had Foster not emerged during the end of the season....
2005 A.Foster 879 yds 4.8 avg 5 TDs
2005 G.Riggs 530 yds 4.2 avg 3 TDs

Nice post! Thanks.

You also have to take into consideration that our QB's couldn't throw for a first down, that also hurt our rushing stats. Hard to stay on the field and pile up rushing yards when the chains aren't moving.

Foster did all he could...

I love how some uninformed people constantly blame Casey Clausen for the Vols' problems during his years as starting QB. These stats show that he was able to put up good numbers, but the running game was not there to support him.

Who said anything about Casey Clausen?

Nobody has recently. It occurs frequently enough, that I decided to make a preemptive strike. I'm just saying, you can see that the rushing yards were not there during his time, and that really hurt the offense.

Ok, I was just making sure you weren't pointing towards my comment because I wasn't talking about CC.:peace2:

i think foster should get most of the carries but when he gets tired or on third downs maybe hardesty and coker should get some reps

I believe the support from the other backs will help Foster tremendously. He'll have more at the end and he won't be worn out from getting the ball 40 times when the next game approaches.

Not to mention the different styles of all 3 backs, it could be a handful for the defenses. Now all we need is any kind of passing game.

If you want to see a system that has worked with multiple backs look at UGA. Like others have said, you have fresh legs constantly going against weakening defenses as the game goes on. You give them each experience if injury hits. It's harder to prepare for a running game when you have to study multiple styles all in a starting lineup. Basically it gives the opponents' defenses a lot of work to prep for before the game and even more work throughout a game.
