Sitting here with nothing to do waiting on finals and a new coach, I decided to make a depth chart representing the best possible team the Vols could field in today's sec. While we have had great players dating back to the 19th century, the game has changed so much so quickly that I don't think guys like Johnny Majors or Doug Atkins could be effective today just because of the size difference. Keeping that in mind, here is the depth chart. I have also included a dream coaching staff suited for a fantasy world in which recruiting violations do not exist.

QB- Peyton Manning, Heath Shuler, Tyler Bray

FB- Shawn Bryson, Will Bartholomew

RB- Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, Montario Hardesty

WR- Carl Pickens, Da'rick Rogers, Peerless Price, Donte' Stallworth, Robert Meachem, Denarius Moore

TE- Jason Witten, Luke Stocker, Brad Cottam

OT- Chad Clifton, Antone Davis, Tiny Richardson, Chris Scott

OG- Arron Sears, Fred Weary, Cosey Coleman, Jacques McClendon

C- Scott Wells, Spencer Riley

Defense:

DT- Albert Haynesworth, John Henderson, Dan Williams, Justin Harrell

DE- Reggie White, Shaun Ellis, Turk Mcbride, Robert Ayers

LB- Al Wilson, Leonard Little, Jerod Mayo, Parys Haralson, Omar Gaither, Kevin Burnett, Rico McCoy

CB- Terry McDaniel, Dale Carter, Jason Allen, Jabari Greer, Dwayne Goodrich, Dennis Rogan

S- Eric Berry, Deon Grant, Jonathan Hefney, Gibril Wilson

K- Jeff Hall, James Wilhoit

P- Dustin Colquitt, Jimmy Colquitt

LS- Morgan Cox

PR/KR- Cordarrelle Patterson, Wille Gault

Coaching Staff:

Head Coach- Philip Fulmer

OC- Jon Gruden ( was a GA here so he's eligible)

DC- John Chavis

QB- David Cutcliffe

WR- Trooper Taylor

TE- Lane Kiffen

RB- Jay Graham

O-line: Sam Pittman

LB- Monte Kiffin

D-line: Ed Orgeron

Secondary: Terry Joseph

Special Teams: Darin Hinshaw

Thoughts?

You do realize that Atkins was 6'8 and weighed 280 pounds, right?

AMEN! Any list that doesn't include Lauricella, Atkins, Suffridge, Majors, Lucci, Warren, or anybody from earlier years is wasted space. It might as well be a list of the last 20 years. It is NOT all time.

If you were making a list of the best players to ever play, sure, those guys would be included; however, this list is about who would give us the best chance to win in today's SEC. With all due respect to those guys who were great in their era, things have changed too much for them to be effective. The same thing can be said for every sport: if Babe Ruth tried to hit Justin Verlander, he would look like a fool. It doesn't take anything away from what they accomplished in their time, nor does it diminish the importance of their accomplishments.

Then it's not really an all-time list

I realize that you don't know what many of those "old farts" were. Lauricella and J Majors would be QB's ahead of all but Manning. They would fit the mold that folks cry about ... mobile, fast, and a good arm. Atkins could play DE against any team on the field today. Lucci would probably be a safety today but Reynolds would be a linebacker All-American in today's SEC. B Majors would be a winner at DB/PR. You seem to have an overextended imagination of today's greatness.

you really think the Babe couldn't hit a baseball ?

Also, why the hell would our all time coaching staff include the Kiffins, Orgeron, and Trooper Taylor?

Yall need to lighten up. This was just a product of my boredom for entertainment purposes only. Notice I said in my intro, "a saff suited for a fantasy world in which recruiting violations did not exist."

That is your opinion and I respect it; however, you will find plenty of people, young and old, who agree with me. This argument will never have a definitive answer, but I believe that the current SEC athlete is bigger, faster, stronger, and more athletic than those of yesteryear. Again, that fact does not take away from the greatness of players like Lauricella or Majors, what they accomplished back in the day is just as important as what happens today.

Bray IS NOT the 3rd best QB all time at UT

Casey Clausen would be on that team.

I am a huge Shuler fan, but Casey won bigger games & where the He|| is the quarter back that won the National Championship ? Tee Martin ? What about Andy Kelly he did a heck of alot for this University.

Peyton Manning, Tee Martin, Casey Clausen, Andy Kelly

Also, why the hell would our all time coaching staff include the Kiffins, Orgeron, and Trooper Taylor?

thank you I almost exploded when I saw that ! :hi:

other great vols .....

FB- Mose Phillips, Greg Amsler

LB - Raynoch Thompson

RB- Chuck Webb, Charlie Garner

OL - Trey Teague

DB - Terry Fair

DL - Chuck Smith

there are soooo many great Vols out there !
