I was watching FoodTV a couple of days ago, and it had a special wherein one of the network's hosts had taken a trip to Europe. While in London, it was mentioned how fresh the food there was compared to America, since the food is not as filled with the preservatives and other stuff that is pumped into it here, due to government regulations. The point was reiterated in Paris, and the observation made how few overweight people there are there, despite the fact that the average Parisian diet is high in stuff like butter, cheese, bread and the like.

Those observations got something clicking in me. Having been watching FoodTV so much, I've come to realize just how many government regulations mandate what is added into food. Steroids in cattle, preservatives in food, etc. (For instance, you cannot get many good quality cheeses in America since the government regulates or forbids the use of the raw milk that they use in Europe. Which makes the idea of America being such a free country seem even more absurd. How can a nation truly call itself free if the government tells it's citizens what you can and cannot eat? You can call your leaders idiots, but you can't eat what you want. How is that freedom? But, that is a digression for another thread. ) And then you hear all over the news about the obsesity crisis in America, about the fact that most American are overweight. What if the two things are connected?

The government mandates all these things like preservatives and the like being put into foods, and the country subsequently suffers a weight crisis. We still do not fully know what this stuff could be doing to our bodies, and our abilities to fight off fat. Furthermore, as I understand it, although I may be wrong, many of the heavier government regulations were put into place during the 1970's, many artificial stuff started being added to foods, and subsequently, the weight of the average American has gone up.

What do you think? Could I be onto something, or could there be another cause?

See your point. But the government does not tell you what you can and cannot eat. You can choose to grow your own food and cook as you please.

There is an obesity problem in America simply because people will drive around a parking lot for 20 minutes searching for the closest spot to the door, when they could have easily parked 100 yards away from the door and walked in.
