Election 2012: Indifference of the administration and the Defense Department will cause a record low military vote this year, particularly in swing states. Those who protect our right to vote deserve better.

A new report by the Military Voter Protection Project found that absentee ballot requests by the military have dropped significantly since 2008 and are on track to make 2012 a record low for the military vote. As of Sept. 22, requests were down 46% in Florida, 70% in Virginia and 70% in Ohio.

"These are (the) lowest numbers we've seen in the last decade," Eric Eversole, founder and executive director of the project, told U.S. News & World Report's Washington Whispers. "There are a number of factors that go into this, but if the Pentagon was doing what it was supposed to be, this would be a nonissue."

The Pentagon is not doing its job, and the Obama administration doesn't seem to care.

I really hope this isn't true.

What this is, it's absolutely not Obama's answer to the voter id laws.

Wonder if it's just coincidence that this is happening in Swing states?

Seems to crush Mrs. Biden's and Mrs Obama's project to help out military and their families.

In a tight race those votes could make a huge difference.. This race is tight.. Pretty much same states fighting voter ID laws also... No coincidence there either i suppose.

"Requests" seems to be the key word everyone is missing here....

Maybe the military isn't all that excited about either candidate in this election????

Good eye Rasp. can't really blame them if that is the case.

The blame most likely falls on the shoulders of hundreds of Ensigns and Second Lieutenants out there who get "voluntold" to be the Battalion/Squadron Election Officer.

If they want to vote its their responsibility to request the absentee ballot right?

Yeah, because Soldiers are not typically overwhelmingly preoccupied in the middle of combat zones...

Soldiers have other things on their minds, as they should. It is mandated DoD policy that every Battalion-sized element assign at least one Officer and one NCO to be the Elections Officer and the Elections NCO, respectively. ****ty taskings in the Army, I cannot speak for the other services though I imagine they are similar, go to the lowest man on the totem-pole. Thus, in my experience, the Elections guys have been an O-1 and an E-5, respectively.

Of course, many O-1s are Platoon Leaders (and, if they are not PLs, they are most likely being abused in the 3 shop); and many E-5s are Team Leaders. They are working incredibly hard and are just as, if not more, preoccupied (that is, occupied with something other than the elections) than their Soldiers.

The DoD ought to address this system; however, the State and Federal Government ought also to make an effort to just ship pallets full of absentee ballots to combat zones.
